love the El Greco Tacos

I have been passing this place for about a decade without realizing it, I come down here on a bi-weekly basis for my work and always struggle to find anything decent to eat… its all micky dee’s, pizzahut and the rest of the usual crap corporate suspects.

Now, I have eaten here now 10 times in a month! Even brought the wife down on a couple of weekends cos its got this really nice grapevine covered patio.

I love Greek food and have been to Greece a few times so i know a little bit about how it should taste.

Here is the food breakdown
1. The Gyros were amazing, after eating at Daphne’s (the mc donalds of greek food) for years i had lowered my expectations… the ones at the Original Mad Greek (OMG) ones are HOLY F*#K authentic!

2. I have never had better tasting chicken from any “fast food” joint (except @ KFC, it’s a guilty pleasure)

3. They have this hybrid Gyro/Taco thing called El Greco’s the owner (i forget his name) said it was a new creation that was selling like crazy & suggested I try an order. OMG INSANE!!!!
Taco comes with Gyro meat, lettuce, tzaziki (yogurt) a fried zucchini stick and slathered with fiery hot sauce on top, i ordered 3 more to eat in the car, THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS I HAVE EVER EATEN PERIOD!

4. Greek salad, finally found a place that does this simple peasant dish right. Tomatoes, red onion, olives, feta.

5. They also have Kalimaki sticks, (which i was introduced to by a Greek friend 10 years ago, they are great for soaking up booze late at night after the bars in Athens close) basically they are small pieces of meat on skewers that have marinating for a few days, then are put on the fire and served with warm pita bread. simple, flavorful, addictive.

6. Speaking of Pita bread…. this is the best Pita i have ever had (in the USA) i don’t know whether its homemade or imported, but this is really authentic, crispy, pliable and flavorful on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I’m gonna ask the owner next time if i can buy some to take home.

7. Stupidly cheap. I mean really cheap, I felt like telling the owner that he must be nutz charging these prices, but i do like a deal so i didnt :) (Living in LA, i would be paying double for the same thing) dont worry fellow yelpers i dont think he even knows yelp exists so no danger of him getting wind and upping his prices!

P.S.i read the reviews from other posts, everyone seems to be all over the hummus, i cannot comment on that as I hate hummus, but i am sure its great. BTW the menu is huge with a lot of American offerings like burgers and stuff ??? but i bet there are all good.

Restaurant atmosphere.

On my first visit the building looked like it needed a good paint. on my second visit i was really pleased to see that it had received a crisp white covering… what a difference! they also had started on changing the OMG sign, the owner told me that he was doing some light remodeling (which it needs, as long as it don’t get too fancy as it already has a certain charm and be a shame to lose that)

The best thing about the OMG (aside from the food) is the patio. it is the only place within 5 miles where you would actually like to sit out and eat in the open! it has really comfortable and good looking wrought iron tables and chairs. Above you is grapevine canopy that keep the sun out, surrounding you is rosemary, basil, oregano and other fragrant plants, in the center is a lovely fountain that manages to block out the noise of Beach Blvd. Its an oasis!

They also serve beer and wine and you can smoke if you want (as it’s the OC you might be the only one)

I used to hate coming down to this area but now the OMG has become a very good guilty pleasure.

beer & wine
happy hour
Free Wifi!!!!!!!!!!!!
free ample parking

interior a bit dated, but spotlessly clean. apparently the owner is going to update soon.
wish they made those little fried greek doughnut balls with honey on top!

N.P. this is the original mad greek, i dont think its affiliated with the one in Baker, certainly the food is not the same… i have only eaten at the Baker MG once but the OMG Stanton is way better IMO!

El Greco Tacos
