Crispy, Crunchy, Greasy, Sloppy Pizza!

Known as a “landmark” pizza place in Milwaukee, a group of us decided to check it out this past Saturday night… had heard a few things prior to arriving; mostly having to do with the ambience and staff (think Laverne and Shirley, only the pizza joint side of the bowling alley and without the beer… !). Very small inside but the decor definitely has to be seen to be believed… A guitar painted with Elvis; many religious icons; Christmas lights; ghosts and goblins… “eclectic” is just the beginning… but let’s talk about the real reason we went – the pizza! There are two sizes available – “small” (i.e. large) and “large” (i.e. larger!). The small is a 14" round; the large is a 14 × 18 rectangle baked on a baking pan with about 6 inches of za hanging off each end! The overhanging edges were crispy and crunchy and delicious; the middle is where it becomes greasy and sloppy. We ordered two variations – sausage, onions, and mushrooms and a deluxe with both sausage and pepperoni. The flavors themselves were outstanding… not sure if it was the meat itself or the sauce or how they played off of each other. And for some reason, the onions really stood out for me, which I loved! All in all, not a bad pizza, but probably not the best I’ve ever had. Would be interested to try to smaller round variation to see how it compares. Other things you may have heard ring true – longish wait for a table; longish wait for the pizza; CASH ONLY; and NO alcohol. The do have Black Bear soda on tap and you can get pitchers of soda for $4… some of us decided to be adventurous and get a pitcher of Blue Raspberry soda… tastes just like a snow cone or a blue Icee!! Yum, and fun! Anyway, if you’re looking for a place that screams “Old Milwaukee” you should give it a try; for fantastic pizza, I’d probably go to Balisteri’s on 68th in Tosa instead.

Very good thin crust pizza

Went to Maria’s with a very large group. The place was filled and I can understand why. For less than $50, our table of 7 ordered 2 large (very large) pizzas, cheesy garlic bread and a pitcher of soda. What a deal! This was the largest, large pizza I have ever seen. It was so large it was almost falling off the pan. The pizza was classic and very thin crust. One of our pizzas had mushrooms, but they were canned – not a big fan of canned mushrooms on my pizza. Overall the food was very good. The only negative comment I have is the ladies’ room is in the basement and still has the old style of towels on the wall that you pull to wipe your hands instead of a fresh towel/paper towel.

One of the best pizzerias in Milwaukee

Great pizza and garlic cheese bread. Prices are very reasonable as we spent $20 for two of us including a large (really large) pizza, two orders of garlic cheese bread and soda. The dining room is adorned with pictures of Jesus, Moses, and even Elvis. The staff is friendly and attentive. Its a neighborhood gem.

Pizza

The pizza is made with a paper thin crispy crust with the perfect amount of cheese, sauce and toppings. The large is about 2 feet long by 1 foot wide. It hangs over the edge of both end of the pan. It is crispy on the edges and soft in the middle. DELICIOUS.

Garlic cheese bread

The garlic cheese bread is toasted (the size of a hoagie roll) which is crispy along the edges and gooey on the inside. It has lots of butter/oil with garlic and a mound of melted mozzarella cheese. It is cut into six pieces. We enjoyed it so much we ordered a 2nd serving.

Been around forever, and you can see why

If you’ve ever been to Maria’s Pizzaria, you would not forget the place based on the decor. Every inch of wall space is jammed with wall art (mostly religious). The place has been around forever and you can see why when you eat there — the pizza is amazing. The crust is really thin and you can roll it up and eat it. The sausage is large and very tasty.

Pizza

The large pizzas are so large, you and another person might have trouble finishing them yourselves.
