Soba and udon at Mifune

For traditional soba and udon, Mifune in the Kintetsu Mall in Japantown is the place to go. They have slurpable bowls of noodles in tasty broth with various toppings. You can also get shabu shabu, sukiyaki, donburi and crispy korroke, or Japanese potato croquettes. My kids love the cold zaru soba and unagi don. Admittedly, service can sometimes be lackluster, unless you get Maya who is a sweetheart, but remember you’re there mainly for the food. The curry and oyako donburi are good, too, although I wish the portions of food (not the rice but the other goodies) were a little bigger. Mifune’s sibling, Mifune Don, is located in the Miyako Mall upstairs and has a similar menu but also serves good okonomiyaki, savory Japanese-style pancakes.

Zaru maguro

Cold soba with that delicious, salty dipping sauce paired with thin slices of sushi grade tuna. Soooo good. You have to use the grated daikon, green onion and wasabi in the dipping sauce, it imparts great flavor.
It’s a satisfying, comforting meal. The hot sobas and udon are just as good, it depends on your mood. On a hot day, cold soba is refreshing. I’ve had soba at other places that are either too al dente or kind of mealy but the soba here is always the right consistency. If service was a little more attentive, I would give it 4 stars.
