Mike's Pastry - A Legend in the North End
While walking around the city I noticed a lot of tourists with blue bakery boxes. I asked around and found out that people flock to it — including presidents. So I had to go check it out.
There was a line out the door. Quite an experience.
An Italian family – generations has run this gem of a bakery. Everything is made daily – “fresh ingredients” by Mike and his staff for over 50 years. He will custom make just about anything. Wood floors, old time glass cases and string hanging from the ceiling to tie the famous blue boxes. Noisy and wonderful.
Dishes Tried:
Canolo
You can’t have just one Canolo — though I always pronounced it “Cannoli”. Rich and buttery filled with ricotta cheese and I had the chocolate chips. They reminded us that even the shells are made daily at the bakery.
I also had a couple of Lobster Tails. It looks like a lobster’s tail and the shell is made of layered baked pastry, interlocking in the way that the parts of a lobster’s tail does. Filling choices just send this over the moon.
It was well worth the trip and wait in line. Tourists flock hereto take their picture.

Really great bakery and ridiculous amounts of human traffic flock to this place just for the stuff, which will cater to your every whim and make your sweet tooth happy. Only walk to this location since the North End is just oh so great to park. Fantastic variety if you can actually get up to the counter to look, given the hordes of people in this small bakery.
