Mondo Taco serves up huge international flavors in LA
The taco, not only a Mexican food culture staple, has now become a vehicle to serve foods and flavors not necessarily associated with Mexican cuisine. Sam Spector saw this possibility to showcase international cuisine that would tempt the taste buds of hungry foodies. No matter what you might be craving, Mondo Taco has you covered which tapas-style dining around the world. Since LA is a melting pot of cultures, food ingredients are accessible to create all of these flavors in one kitchen. With his 30 years of restaurant experience, his baby, Mondo Taco was born on July 23, 2012.
Dishes Tried:
Beefeater
Beefeater is braised short rib topped with horseradish slaw. Wow! This is fantastic. The short rib was tender and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The horseradish slaw was subtle yet refreshingly creamy and added a crunchy texture. The tortillas were awesome with a rich corn flavor and just the right thickness. Thumbs up, way up!
El Greco
El Greco is marinated roasted lamb topped with tzatziki and diced tomato. This taco tastes just like a gyro but better. The lamb had a special spice almost like cinnamon, adding a little sweetness. The tzatziki was creamy, cool, and refreshing. Thumbs up, way up!
Tokyo Shrimp
Tokyo Shrimp is tempura shrimp topped with avocado and spicy mayo. The shrimp was cooked perfectly with a crisp snap. The avocado and spicy mayo tasted like you were eating a sushi roll, but without the rice and nori (seaweed). Taco was the perfect vehicle for these flavors. Thumbs up, way up!
Holy Mole
Holy Mole is marinated chicken topped with mole and sesame seeds. The medium color mole was sweet and had a little heat to tantalize the taste buds. The chicken absorbed a lot of the flavor making it almost like pulled pork. Thumbs up!
Afrentina
Afrentina is Moroccan lamb topped with chimichurri sauce. The Moroccan spices on the lamb will launch you into an unstoppable eating frenzy. It was tender and juicy. The chimichurri sauce was spot on with a vibrant green and EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) flavor. These flavors matched perfectly in a taco form. Thumbs up, way up!
Bayou Fish
Bayou Fish is grilled Cajun fish topped with jambalaya and Cajun aioli. The fish was tender and succulent. It could use more blackened spices to kick up the Cajun flavor. The aioli was fantastically creamy. The jambalaya had the holy trinity of flavor to boast. Thumbs up!
