The main dishes at Ol Heidelberg are really excellent. I had a Jaeger Schnitzel and I would say that I haven’t had that good of one since I lived in Germany.
I would have given Ol Heidelberg a 5 star except that their bread and potatoes are not up to the standard of the schnitzel. They served a fairly good sourdough along with some rather boring standard bread slices. Everything in the restaurant just screamed that they should be serving small hard rolls or at least deli quality pumpernickel instead of standard bread slices. It is a shame that they missed it on something as simple as bread.
Also, real German restaurants have awesome french fries and potato salad. Neither of them were all that good. The potato salad had too much vinegar and some unidentifiable spice that just did not seem German at all. It was certainly above average, it just wasn’t very German.
The dessert is fabulous. Given that the restaurant has to serve American clientele, I would give them a pass for not being authentic on the dessert. For American dessert, it was fabulous.
Price is a bit steep, but the schnitzel is worth it.
