The Original Pancake House is the ultimate breakfast getaway
The Original Pancake House began in 1953 in Portland, Oregon by Les Highet and Erma Hueneke. With their experience in the culinary arts, they used their extensive knowledge and collected pancake recipes from around the world. Everything is made in-house with fresh ingredients from 93 score butter, 36% whipping cream, grade AA eggs, and hard wheat unbleached flour. They even developed their own sourdough starter recipe. The location in Orange opened on May 29, 2008 is owned by Jim Osborn. The service at this location is friendly and fast, almost diner-like, where the servers call you, “Honey”. He also owns the location in Norco, CA as well.
Dishes Tried:
Dutch Baby
Dutch Baby is oven baked and served with whipped butter, lemon, and powdered sugar. It is HUGE! The presentation was like a meteor strike, high cliffs with a sunken crater in the middle and covered in snow white powdered sugar. It was a cross between a soufflé and bread pudding. The outside was crusty and the inside was soft and custard like. Thumbs up, way up!
Thick Sliced Bacon
The Thick Sliced Bacon was an experience. The thick-cut bacon was fried so it had a nice crispy outer layer but was still tender in the middle (a difficult feat for thick bacon). The thicker the bacon, the harder it is to get the crispy texture; sort of like frying up a thick piece of pork belly. The smoky, pepper flavor was perfectly infused and had just the right amount of salt. Thumbs up, way up!
Fresh Vegetarian Omelette
Fresh Vegetarian Omelette was a fluffy omelette filled with broccoli, tomatoes, fresh mushrooms, aged cheddar cheese, and served with three buttermilk pancakes. You can upgrade to bacon pancakes which is quite an experience if you like the combination of sweet and savory, like chicken and waffles. It sounds weird, bacon bits inside of pancakes, but it was out of this world. The buttermilk pancake batter was spiked up with the smoky, saltiness of the bacon. It was a great flavor combination. Thumbs up, way up!
Denver Omelette
Denver Omelette is also served with three buttermilk pancakes. This was the best omelet ever! The eggs were so fluffy that the omelette looks like a football. The fluffiness even added to the flavor making the eggs seem as though they were just wispy clouds. The mixture of cheese and vegetables were wonderful. Thumbs up, way up!
Coffee
The Original Pancake House proudly serves Diedrich Coffee. It was smooth and has a great aroma and flavor – the way good brewed coffee is supposed to taste like.
