I love finding place like this.
If you like nostalgic, “Wow, look at that” kind of restaurants, you’ll like this place. The decor looks like it hasn’t changed in years. The bar looks vintage, the booths do, too, and the whole place has the air and feel of the late 40’s to early 50’s.
Located in the Navajo Street Art District, this places claims to be Denver’s oldest Italian restaurant, and I believe them. I was almost expecting an old, chain-style toilet in the restroom, and I was almost right. The toilet was new, but the sink was vintage 1920 – no kidding. If you go to this place, make sure to take a pit stop.
The whole visit for me was a walk down memory lane, even the pasta. They serve up the old-style, homemade pasta that looks like it was pressed out of Playdough toy – thick. If you don’t like the think, go for the cappellini; it’s not like angel hair at all. It’s more like what you’d expect from another restaurant’s spaghetti.
The sauce is vegetarian, and they don’t soak their meatballs or sausage in it to keep them warm. So, vegetarians can order without worry. All dinners come with soup or salad, (the minestrone is made with a beef base), and a bowl of bread – just how they used to do it in the old days.
The only thing really new about this place are the prices, which more reflect the modern era, but you will get a good-sized plate of food, and they do offer decent table wines at decent prices.
OH, by the way, here’s a treat. There’s ample “free” parking just one block north of the restaurant. I love that! Here’s the website with pictures, but I don’t remember the place being that well lit: http://www.patsysinn.com/patsysinn/Welcome.html (One last note: this restaurant has two sides – one is the restaurant, and one is the pizza parlour, but you can only get pizza at the pizza parlour).
Dishes Tried:
Half and Half
I love that they offer this with “Cheese” ravioli that tastes homemade, and if filled with ricotta. You’ll get three, large raviolis on your plate with your choice of pasta. I went for the cappellini and was not disappointed, but I do believe the chef overcooked mine just a bit. Next time, I’ll go for the spaghetti my wife had.
Spaghetti
This is good, old-fashioned, homemade spaghetti like you just can’t find anywhere anymore. The sauce, (Patsy’s Sauce), is a nice, animal product-free tomato sauce that was very nice.
The salad they serve with the meal is pretty good, too, including carrots and tomatoes. The bread is white bread, but it has a good flavor.
Chianti
They have bottles of Staccali Chianti for $20 each that go well with all of the tomato dishes served. Chianti is not my favorite wine, but I find it goes so well with Italian food.
