Good value and selection

This is another branch of the Pearl’s chain which offers Korean style BBQ with your choice of vegetables. They have a good selection and ample portions, it is easy to share a plate if you’re not starving.

Chicken Katsu Curry

Crunchy and slightly sweet, the chicken is prepared in the typical katsu style with panko, then deep fried. It is placed on a bed of rice and covered with a thick mild curry sauce. I selected choi sum, macaroni salad, kim chee, and blanched brocolli. the other choices of sides include cucumber kim chee, corn, tofu, Korean pancake, long rice, cabbage, seaweed, and mayonnaise grilled potato, as well as shoyu potato.

Combo Plate

Pearl’s will make almost any combo, and I had the Meat Jun/Mandoo combo. Same choices of 4 sides and rice, with a generous portion of egg-battered barbecue meat and fried dumplings. I selected these choices because they are not as salty as some of the teriyaki-style meats. Again, portion are large enough to share, or you can opt for mini plates that have less rice and only 2 sides.

Served Old, Hard Rice

4/26/2011 – I was craving a barbeque beef plate and since I was in the Kahala area, decided to order from Pearl’s. First of all, their side selections are very limited. They didn’t have the egg omlet that I usually get at the Pearl’s in Manoa. The barbeque beef really wasn’t very tasty, but I was way too hungry and overlooked the fact that taste was just not there. My white rice was old, old, old!!!!!!!!! You know when rice has been sitting out for days and the rice grain is really hard and dried out. Couldn’t eat it and it was stuck to my teeth!!!!!!! They must have mixed the old rice with some new one. You know, it really ruins a meal, when you’re eating old rice!!!!!!!!! And paying $8.16 for a mini plate, that’s totally inexcusable!!!! I am never going back to the Kahala location as I am tremendously disappointed in the quality of the food.
