Not good to vegetarians.
Today, I had lunch at Perkins Restaurant and Bakery in DeLand, and I had an unfavorable enough experience that I was actually motivated enough to join menuism.com and write my first ever review of a restaurant.
First, let me start off by saying there are some good things. I had no issue with my waiter. The restaurant has potential. The problem is that it fails to live up to that potential. For example, there are nice luxuriously sized comfortable booths for eating. The waiters and waitresses do as fine a job here as in other similar places. The restaurant is fairly quiet, which can be nice in comparison to a lot of other places. I do not take specific issue with the food, although I do wish the menu catered more to vegans. Years ago, I used to enjoy the bread bowls I was served at a different Perkins. Unfortunately, they have discontinued the item and so I no longer attempt to order it. Unfortunately, the negative is so powerfully noxious as to overwhelm me to the point that they get a rating of “Horrible!” in spite of all the pros.
If it were not for the dismissive comment I received at the counter as reward for my suggestion to have more vegan options on the menu, this review probably would not have been written. I would like to add, that my suggestion and feedback in general was not unsolicited, and I have never before written a negative review of any restaurant I have ever dined at, and I do dine out regularly. The comment was that I could just order stuff not on the menu or modify things on the menu. I am tired of hearing this kind of stupidity come out of people’s mouths. Was it even feasible that I could not have known this? I have just eaten there and the only way for me to do it was in fact to modify the menu. It is complete insensitive ignorance that restaurant owners or managers think this way. The comment shows a real failure to understand the issue from the perspective of the customer or it shows a failure to care. I have been vegan for many years, do you think I am a stranger to menu modifying? I wish people would think before they speak.
The days when restaurants could ignore significant minorities like vegans are behind us. Perkins has competition from other establishments, say Dennys, which seem to cater to a similar demographic and yet have the wisdom to include a veggie burger option explicitly on their menu. What possible wisdom is there in having a menu that pretends that vegetarians do not exist in this day and age? None! Unless I am overlooking the value of some great mass of anti-vegetarian bigots who only want to eat at places where vegetarians are unwelcome? If this is how they feel, if it is no inconvenience at all as is apparently their position, why do they bother to put out menus in the first place? Menu options have no purpose, after all… there is no inconvenience at all to expect your customers to just ignore the menus.
They call themselves a family restaurant. Does your family have a vegetarian? What do you think the message is about who is included as a rightful member of the family and who is not when a family restaurant puts out a menu that pretends everyone eats meat and cheese? Maybe it’s only a family restaurant for people who use the word “family” as a euphemism for intolerance.

I said no Turkey or cheese. I am not sure if the dressing was vegan or not, but i let it slide. The veggies seemed fresh enough, but you know it is expensive for a salad and there was no discount for no meat. I left with a belly ache, but I think that was because the cashiers attitude upset me and probably not the fault of the food.
