Fabulous Seafood!

I used to live in Sarasota, and Phillipi Creek was one of my favorite places to eat. My wife and I ate their recently while vacationing in Sarasota, and it was lovely to see that Phillipi Creek still serves excellent food in a fun setting.

A Sarasota landmark for seafood

The Phillippi Creek restauant has been voted the “Best of the Best” raw bar and seafood restaurant 12 years in a row. And no wonder—this is a throwback to the old Florida restaurant traditions, and thus greatly appreciated by Sarasotans and unhesitatingly recommended to all tourists and new comers.

And the word is out… you can expect a wait of 1/2 hour or more if you come at the busy time. But the wait is well worth it. The oyster bar is jumping, and the seafood menu is teffific. This is a fun, happenin’ place, sure to be one of your favorites, too. Clientele are so friendly, they start speaking to whomever is around them.

The grouper, absolutely caught that day, was served with small hush puppies on a bed of onion and corn—unusual, but good. The fish, of couse, is so good that every bite is savored. To avoid a long wait, I took the last seat at the bar, and ate there. I’m going back for the oysters next time.

poor quality food

We have had some wonderful seafood meals, but this certainly was not one of them. As we are travelers here for the first time, my husband solicited the help of some people he perceived as locals for a place to go for a late lunch.

I ordered the fried combination plate. The fish appeared to be frozen, heavily battered, and overcooked in oil. The crab cake was one of the worse I ever tasted. The best thing I had was the steamed vegetables. My husband’s grouper was blackened and not as bad as mine. However, the seasoning was awful. His steamed potatoes were heavily covered in something – we don’t know what because he wouldn’t eat them. The coleslaw and hushpuppies he said was not very good.

Our meals cost over $50 and we left hungry! The waitress was lovely so we tipped her well.

My advice is if you like good seafood do not go here… there are too many really good seafood restaurants in the area. If you do, I would not recommend either of these dishes.
