Hippie Grocery with a Kitchen
Date Visited: Sunday 2/8/09 (Dinner)
Can’t say I’ve often been to dinner in St. John’s, so this was a new experience in many ways. My Gator and I had left the Blazers basketball game and decided to check out Proper Eats. It was easy enough to find, with the help of the iPhone.
The cafe is located at the back of the vegan market, on the corner of N. Lombard and Alta. We had rockstar parking, right out in front of the cafe. The menu seemed pretty good, so it was a little hard to choose what to get.
Our server said he’d been there for 2 years and he was waiting on all the tables there. He was great – very informative when we asked questions (and we had many).
The decor of the restaurant was simple. Many photos hung on the wall. There were games and picture books on a table near us. I guess there’s live music there several days a week.
I’ll gladly host a lunch or dinner there in the near future. Just not sure how well-received it will be, seeing that I don’t know many who live in that area. However, it seemed the Yellow Line does go to within a mile of the restaurant and I’m sure a bus will get folks the rest of the way. I’m eager to try more from the menu and hope this is one vegan spot that sticks around.
Dishes Tried:
Shepherd's Pie
Alicks settled on the BBQ Tempeh sandwich while I got the Shepherd’s Pie. We were told the portions were pretty big, so we skipped an appetizer.
The BBQ tempeh with side salad was certainly a good sized portion. It was quite tasty and I’d get it again. I thought the Shepherd’s pie was also really good and proceeded to wolf it down at my usual speed-demon pace. We went a little crazy and each had a cupcake for dessert. Alicks had the German Chocolate and I had the Carrot Cake. Both were delicious and, apparently, from Black Sheep Bakery. I need to go there and find out what else they have! I’ll bet they make wedding cakes. ;)
