Brunch Comparison

After going to Three brunches we thought we would put our two cents in. We went to Apple Betty or whatever it is called and for the cost, don’t bother. The salad is fresh and they have lost of offerings of salad sides but after that it goes downhill. The bacon was OK and tolerable but you could see the bottom pieces floating in a greasy pool. They had the usual eggs, potatoes, fried chicken (horrible pasta), no carving food, they were out of waffles or whatever hot starch they were offering and the Chinese fair on the other side of the food bar was stale tasteless and actually gave me heartburn. The desserts were all right but in all honesty my favourite was just the pudding and the fresh ice cream. They do offer free beverages (a plus) with unlimited refills. Our verdict: Skip

Mission Springs Brewery in Mission was a fantastic find: For less than Apple Betty’s the selection was fantastic. The food was not the best and the Eggs Benny were a little hard but we truly enjoyed the selection offerings. You order both your custom made crepes and omelette from the table and they are delivered. There was only two salads, one Caesar, one pasta (a minus), thick but soggy bacon, enchiladas ( a plus), potato dishes, egg dish and a chicken dish (all plus). They also had smokies which the kids loved and mac and cheese. They had Fresh French toast (a minus overall) and fresh waffles (a plus). One great surprise was carved roast beef offered medium rare (just perfect) and they even had some devilled eggs (not good). Overall for under $15 it was quite a value and even though it was not high end, we will be back again. The crepe and omelette station n alone would be worth the trip. The dessert section was non existent with just some cookies and a few tarts. They did have a wonderful strawberry an chocolate parfait that was freshly made and very tasty. There were some little things that make this establishment quite unique. They offered unlimited whipped crème for all items and fresh strawberry sauce so you can put this on all your french toast, waffles or whatever you choose. Verdict: Please Try

Q Steakhouse in Abbotsford was the last and I’ll review this below

Over the last Month or so we have been trying out different brunches in our area of Abbotsford and Mission. We have gone to three brunches and last one we were at was at Q Steakhouse. I saw and ad in the paper and frankly had no idea this restaurant existed, let alone had a Sunday Brunch. The atmosphere was very inviting and as soon as we walked in saw the dessert table. By far this was the best selection I have ever seen except for maybe Newlands. There was an incredible cheese and fruit selection along with dozens of sweet treats. Anyway back to the Brunch itself. Our server was polite and very friendly. We were told they had buffet only on Sunday which suited us fine and first off started with cold salads and pasta. I was a little disappointed that there was only one dressing for the salads (a house dressing) and maybe a little alternative ranch or blue cheese dressing would be offered. The pasta salad was fresh and very good. They also had a shrimp dish that offered very sizable and fresh cold shrimp,
Our next trip was to the hot dishes. The bacon was a little soggy and I prefer crispier style but it was still good and not too greasy. They had fresh pirogues/sour crème, cubed potatoes (normal tasting , lasagne (very good), a chicken dish (not the tastiest) but the eggs Benedict were to die for- Fresh and perfectly made.
After this helping we were ready for dessert but first we stopped by the cheese and fruit platter. This was beautifully positioned and set up elegantly. The cheese selection was phenomenal and the array of types were quite astonishing. Every seasonal fruit was offered and was beautifully seated alongside the fruit area.
The desserts were next and almost every possible choice was offered from pecan pie to about a dozen or more individual cakes or dessert pates. They also had fresh strawberry and crème puffs with wooden skewers for dipping into warm melted chocolate. The hot plate crisp dessert was just so-so.
One comment from both my wife was the orange juice ordered on the side was almost rancid and not fresh squeezed. One might have expected a fresher offering but it was only a minor set-back.
Overall it was a lovely day with no hurry and the noise level in this fine establishment was very low. For $15.97 it was a very nice way to start a Sunday. Verdict: Please Try

Sunday Dinner Buffet

One of the best buffets I have ever had. The value for what you get is far superior to any in the Fraser valley. All items were fresh starting with the rolls and buns to the the salad and cold seafood bar and onto the hot entrees. According to the Chef the menu varies every Sunday and this weekend we had carved prime rib, two types of chicken, ribs. pasta, potatoes, fresh vegetables, salmon and pasta.
The fresh fruit and cheese board were a very welcome treat. there must have been 10-12 different cheeses to choose from. After two helpings we finally made it over to the dessert area and there was everything from fresh cheesecake, petite cakes, torts to creme puffs and chocolate fondue and also carrot cake and apple crisp. We were so impressed we came back to Q`s for the Sunday Brunch the next weekend
