North Scottsdale's Intimate Dining & Event Venue!
If you’ve had the pleasure of attending a wedding or special event in Scottsdale, Arizona, you probably know about Sassi Italian Restaurant on East Pinnacle Peak Parkway. Nationally known as THE locale for special occasion events and fine Italian dinners, this Tuscan oasis offers an escape from the everyday norm, and entry into a world of fine cuisine, magical ambiance, and romantic fascination at every turn. Whether it be the serene trickling of fountains nearby, the dim lighting and aroma of blooming Jasmine during dinner on the outdoor terrace, or the picturesque views of desert and sunset, Sassi will take your breath away with each bite, glance, and inhalation of Tuscan delights readily available at this intimate and intriguing establishment.
We were anxious to discover the secrets of Sassi when we traveled there for dinner one evening from the nearby resort where we were staying for a few days. Our arrival was after dark, and what we expected of the restaurant was not even close in terms of the romantic and intimate dinner that we were hoping for…it was that and so much more!
Our hostess escorted us to a softly lit dining table on an elongated outdoor terrace. A fire pit burned slowly nearby, whispering to a gentle breeze that found its way along the greenery-surrounded verandah. The walk past narrow flowing fountains en route to our table enhanced our mood even more. Arched carved wooden doors graced several entryways as we approached our dining destination on the patio, making us feel as though we were somewhere else…somewhere exotic almost…somewhere extraordinary.
Our server arrived promptly with menus and warm breads from the kitchen. The cast of shimmering light from a wrought iron candle holder on our table encouraged a relaxing experience. Specials of the evening were explained in detail, and drink orders were received before our waitress disappeared to retrieve our evening libations. The quiet night was only broken by occasional laughter from a distant table, a night owl commenting to the moon, or the sound of the fire crackling beside us. Essentially, the scene was set, and the ambiance was perfect.
My husband ordered the Lemoncello Mojito. One of his favorite liquid weaknesses, the house made lemoncello and fresh mint with a taste of lime was graciously welcomed on such a mild evening. The hue of this beverage was gratifying visually, and its blended components inside of the tall glass were admirable in front of candlelight.
Our first appetizer arrived as though it was a precious package prepared just for our enjoyment. This single filled pasta creation with tender and savory short rib meat continued to impress with its sage brown butter deliciousness and flavorsome decorative Parmigiano shavings. A delightful start to our meal, there was only more on the horizon for us as we continued ordering.
Our second flavor sensation of the night was the Squash Blossoms presentation, which consisted of petite squash blossoms stuffed with decadent ricotta, Parmigiano cheese and coordinating herbs. These were then lightly breaded and fried just until crisp. Lightly crunchy with the warm reward of the ricotta and cheese inside, these were superlative precursors to our upcoming entrees.
Chef Chris Nicosia continued to awe our taste buds with his inspiring creations, as my husband’s Pesce I Agrumi arrived. This seasonal halibut was pan seared then prepared to perfection. The accompanying olive conglomeration that came on top of the fish was preserved on the side, as requested, but made a beautiful addition to the golden exterior of the main attraction of this dish. An exceptional presentation, and an outstanding tender flaky texture with flavor to boast about for a long time to come.
I left my traditional comfort zone and opted for the Lamb Due Sapori. The wood grilled lamb chop, lamb ossobuco, and braised greens happily bathed in a divine and meaty-tasting porcini puree. The meat literally fell off the bone when manipulated with a utensil, and the flavor was unbelievable…meaty, savory, not too salted. Just perfect.
The festive Cannoli della Casa is Sassi’s signature dessert. This traditional Italian dessert comprised of rich ricotta and mascarpone was then further enhanced with luscious Grand Marnier and cinnamon, then showered with crumbled chocolate, crunchy colorful pistachios, and Confectioner’s sugar to create the above dazzling outcome.
Intimate and romantic setting, memorable service and cuisine, and intriguing ambiance at every turn…everything that Sassi offered cast just the right atmosphere for what we were hoping to find. We look forward to returning in the near future for another remarkable dining experience. We know the staff and management will only exceed our expectations even more on our next visit!
