Smoque BBQ

Smoque is located at 3800 N. Pulaski, just south of Irving Park on Pulaski. They have a simple menu with a few meet selections and a few side options, but that is all you need if it’s good BBQ, which they definitely have. The beef brisket is tender and extremely flavorful, the pulled pork is moist, the ribs out of this world. With sweet tea to drink and sides like BBQ baked beans, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, and fresh cut fries, who could ask for anything more. Everything is perfect save the limited space, I give Smoque a 5 out of 5.

After hearing about this place from quite a number of people, I was really excited to try it! We came in the middle of the afternoon (so during off hours) on a Saturday and the place wasn’t quite packed but full enough. I was just glad there wasn’t a long line. Ample parking too!

It works kind of like a fast food restaurant. Place your order at the counter, get your receipt and number, and sit while you wait (quick wait). The host actually assigns your seat(s) for you. Seats are mainly 2 seater tables lined up like a cafeteria bench so be prepared to sit next to strangers – not a biggie!

The host was kind enough to bring us these extra “spicier” sauces and candied jalapenos. Yum! I did like these extra spicier sauces compared to the regular one that comes with your food. It had an extra kick. The candied jalapenos were really sweet but spicy at the same time (see pic) – very unique. Overall, thumbs up!

I saw this restaurant on Diners, Drive inns and Dives and put it on my list so on a recent trip to Chicago a few months ago my boyfriend and I tried Smoque for my birthday. As soon as I saw the line that snaked out of and around the rather nondescript building I knew I was in for some really good BBQ and I was right. Oh and did I mention it was snowing and about 24 degrees, which I know is no great indication for people use to standing in line while it snows it was however a real show of faith for a southern girl. We both had brisket and it was so tender and juicy with a nice vinegary sweet sauce and completely cooked to perfection. Oh and don’t forget the sides, the mac and cheese was awesome, it was creamy and perfect after spending some time out in the snow, it was warm and gooey and just the right compliment to the tangy bbq sauce. The coleslaw was very fresh and a crispy addition to all the richness of the brisket and mac and cheese. Smoque has great atmosphere. The staff while friendly are a well oiled machine that made that time out in snow as short as possible. But trust me it’s worth the wait in any weather.

Best BBQ in the city. They tend to run out of meat on busy weekend days, so get there early. Another thing that makes me smile about this place – sweet tea. =)
