Great dining in Old Montreal

A great place to go for casual, fun occasions, intimate dining, or after an event. The food is always consistent, well done, reasonably priced for the quality. Plus it’s ethnic (Polish), so different from the “same-old, same-old” for a change of pace. The decor is cozy yet classy, in a historical building, with authentic stone walls, in Old Montreal. Not too big, not too cramped, not so noisy that you can’t hear yourself talk. Service is excellent, with a dedicated staff.

Fantastic; a must-order; perfect appetizer

4 of 4 stars (excellent, casual dining).

Love it. Good Polish food in a cozy atmosphere.

They don’t have the dozens of vodkas as they did years ago, so that was a disappointment.

Love the pickled herring.

About $30 per person for lunch, no dessert, booze included, gratuity excluded.

About my ratings:

Only high-priced dining establishments can garner five stars. Until menuism realizes that a fast food joint cannot possibly be ranked equally with a $100 per person place, I need to draw the line somewhere. If we were only talking about the quality and presentation of the food, it would be a different story. But, as we know, menuism’s rankings take into account the entire dining experience.

Therefore, I divide restaurants into three categories (and I wish menuism would do the same):

1) fast food and “fast-casual”, low-priced (no table service).

2) casual, mid-priced dining (table service, average entrée price: $10-$20).

3) fine, high-priced dining (linen napkins, no plastic cups, no TV’s in dining room, average entrée priced at more than $20, can vary depending on the city).

High-priced dining can earn a max of five stars. Mid-priced dining can earn a max of four stars. Fast food can earn a max of three stars.

comfort for the belly, but not the wallet

This is one of those places that I’d heard a lot about for years but hadn’t had a chance to visit — till now. It was busy but not crowded, with a piano player at the entrance and plenty of artwork everywhere you looked.

I liked what I had, but I found the prices expensive. Not being very familiar with Polish cooking, the Primer meal (a taste of everything) was tempting, but at $28.50 out of my budget.

Whatever you order, save room for dessert!

Watrobka z drobiu, po Warszawsku

Chicken livers sautéed with onions, served with chunks of potatoes and finely chopped beets. I liked this, the liver was cooked just right and thankfully there was no bacon in sight. The beets were on the sweet side, but a dash of pepper was a welcome addition. Snitch some sour cream from your tablemate, it goes well with the potato.

Fruit flavors change daily.

I tasted the borscht that came with my tablemate’s table d’hote, and I was disappointed. I expected chunks of vegetable, maybe a few bits of meat, like I’ve made myself — but this was a watery broth the color of blood. I tried stirring in a bit of sour cream, as suggested by a regular — it helped, but not enough to impress me.
