Something for Everyone!

Sunnyside is a bit of an adventure. Many rooms comprise the space for diners, including small rooms for a large party to have privacy and quiet. Each room has a slightly different atmosphere, but all are friendly, warm, inviting, with a sense of candle glow throughout. Each section’s tables are tucked in so that groups feel both a true welcome and quiet. An old Carlisle establishment, Sunnyside was founded by Greek immigrants in 1948, just opposite the U.S. Army War College. Today, the second generation of the family manages every detail.

Veal Parmesan

One of many signature dishes, Sunnyside does Italian favorites just as well as Greek! The dish arrives in a huge oval bowl, with tons of al dente spaghetti, topped with a fresh fried, tender, breaded veal cutlet, all covered with lightly browned mozzarella and parmesan cheese. All entrees include a vegetable or two, and I started with the Greek house salad. If you are trying to keep the calories down, you have to watch yourself with this one, as the flavors blend all too well. But remember to take some home. Your dogs will give leftovers 5 woofs, or you may get greedy and save it for yourself!

Broiled Pork Chops

Sunnyside presented our second diner a dream American plate of grilled pork chops. The eater specified VERY well done meat, and the chef sent two very large, center cut, bone in, juicy chops prepared exactly as ordered. The side dishes chosen were traditional (in Pennsylvania, anyway) applesauce, and a large baked potato, as well as fresh, steamed broccoli.

The Sunnyburger

Another signature dish, extremely popular with youngsters. A giant burger dominates a fresh baked roll, garnished to the hilt with lettuce, tomato and melted cheese. Served with a mound of steak fries, you almost wish you were a kid again and could handle the whole platter. Many veggie choices are offered as side dishes, but our diner isn’t a veggie guy. (You can hardly blame him.) The burger was ordered “medium” but came well-done. Leftovers did get 5 woofs from the two Westies at home.

In fairness, the drinks mixed at Sunnyside vary in preparation. Depending on who is bartending, mixed drinks may meet expectations or not. That’s a correction that could be met, but I think the owners are more interested in the quality of their food, and for that, they can do no better. Service is quick, servers affable but not circus performers for better tips, so good tips come of good work. But the bar is a delightful space of its own, and I wish the owners would attend to that one flaw. Since my review concerns only food, 5 stars seems fair; had bar quality been included, I might have knocked one star off,
