Authentic Cuisine of So. China, esp. Clay Pot Rice

5 STARS!!
It was busy when I arrived, but the service was quick and efficient.

The cuisine is that of a particular region of Southern China, the Taishan (Toi San or Hoi San) District, and this restaurant is a real find because each dish must be skillfully prepared without MSG or being heavily spiced, allowing each item’s flavor to be enjoyed.

Each and every dish is prepared to order, and the staff is very happy to accommodate your individual variation or modification of ingredients and/or seasonings.

The menu choices are numerous, and offers the authentic taste of Toi San (Southern Chinese) cooking. Another specialty is based upon rice and choices of meat/vegetables wrapped in healthful Lotus Leaf and steamed in a bamboo basket.

The prices aren’t too high when you consider that some of the ingredients are quite expensive, and most dishes are very labor-intensive to prepare. The clay pot rice is a meal in itself, and with prices beginning at $6.95, you would be hard-pressed to find such a great value elsewhere.

This is definitely not an ordinary restaurant offering ordinary food, and is unique in offering dishes that you can’t find at other Chinese restaurants.

Give this place a try. Enjoy! Great for lunch, afternoons, dinner and late night as the hours are from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. 7 days a week.

A second location is open at 4401 Cabrillo Street, at 45th Avenue, and offers the same great items along with an extended menu, and is in a larger facility.

Clay Pot Rice w/salted fish and pork patty

On my first visit, I ordered one of their specialties, Salted Fish with Pork Patty Clay Pot Rice, and it was prepared and cooked just right. The flavors from the fish and the pork flavored the rice, but not overwhelmingly. The complimentary lightly sauteed lettuce was light and crunchy. An added plus is that when all that is left is the crispy rice layer at the bottom of the clay pot, just ask for some broth to soften it up a little, and then be prepared for another treat (faan jew), a favorite of mine. Or, if your teeth are in good shape, then just enjoy this flavorful and crispy rice crust. Mmmmmmm!!

These dishes are really made in the genuine clay pot, not just cooked in another vessel and placed into a clay pot for presentation. See the picture of the clay pots as they are served. Allow for about 15 minutes for your clay pot rice to be properly prepared and cooked.
