In the Outer Mission, down a sketchy side street next to a large dumpster, resides a delightful (and belated) culinary find.
The ambiance? I’d describe it as the sort of place the modern, stylish, yet slightly rag-tag cast of “Rent” would hang out: Funky, dark, eclectic, and resolutely welcoming to one and all. Our waitress didn’t put on airs.
Neither did the menu. It doesn’t feature soul food of the southern “grits ’n hush puppies” variety, but rather, funky, Caribbean-accented comfort food to nourish the soul.
My two friends and I were prompted to order the oft-praised cod fritters as an appetizer. As promised, one order wasn’t enough for three people, so we’d gotten two. They were good, although not as orgasmic as some reviewers would lead you to believe; the accompanying sauce was deemed too salty by my tablemates.
For an entree, I ordered the again-oft-praised Miss Ollie’s fried chicken plate, which came with black eyed peas with ham hocks, and mac n’ cheese. Not a disappointment, exactly, since it all tasted good enough; But not transcendent, either. The chicken wasn’t particularly hot when it arrived, the batter was a little too crispy for my liking, and the meat was a little on the dry side. The mac n’ cheese was also kind of cold and a little rubbery. Still, it all tasted good, and the sheer warm-and-fuzzy nature of what I was eating made up for a lack of refinement.
My two friends both ordered the same main course, which may have been the crab n’ grits. They liked it well enough.
Because restaurants with this much soul are a rarity, even in food-packed San Francisco, I do recommend Front Porch for a casual meal with friends.
