OVER-RATED...

Met some friends there about 2 weeks ago. The “great” write-up in NH magazine must be because there is not a lot of competition for with regards to Irish places in New Hampshire…The food was mediocre at best, maybe even a hair lower. The service was slow and unaccommodating. The place itself is just loud, nothing cozy about it at all. The entertainment, was bush league muzak, we hardly new anything they played. Just not a fun place! This is not the first time I had been there, but I’m pretty sure that it’s going to be my last. The other visits there were no different. Simply put…If you want a MUCH BETTER Irish pub experience, Much better food! Great service, Excellent entertainment…Then where you want to go is, The Peddler’s Daughter in Haverhill MA!!!

"Irish Pub" vs. "Sports Bar"

The decor is interesting—the restaurant is located in what was once a church. It is described as an Irish pub, but I would call it a sports bar, definitely not the place for a romantic dinner out. There is a large bar in the middle of the space, and they offer approx. 40 kinds of beer. The tables are at opposite ends of the bar. There are a handful of big screen TV’s going tuned in to whatever game is on. Even on a night when there was practically nobody at the bar and with maybe half the tables full, it was extremely loud in there. On to the food—I have a friend who makes a teriffic spinach and artichoke dip, so we decided to try The Holy Grail’s appetizer for comparison. It was okay, but not great. Perhaps it would have been better if the spinach and artichoke was chopped smaller and blended together better??? They did provide plenty of it along with plenty of bread crisps, however. My companion had the rueben sandwhich and said it was good. I had the angus burger club. It would have been good but for the fact that the bacon was undercooked and thus was chewy and stringy rather than crisp and crunchy. We shared the brownie sundae for dessert, as the waitress said it was the only dessert made on the premises. It was good, but the brownie was much too small. Of note is that we avoided the main dishes because I had read online reviews beforehand in which people said that the sandwiches were consistently good but the main dishes hit or miss.

spinach and artichoke dip

As stated above, I have had better from a friend who is not a professional cook or chef. It was a good sized portion, however.

angus club sandwich

I can’t remember the exact price, but somewhere around there. As stated above, the sandwich would have been better had the bacon not been undercooked. I also wish they would offer more than just three kinds of bread to choose from. The fries that came with it were pretty good.
