Dinner Experience on 10-29-10

Loved this new restaurant near the base of South Mountain in Phoenix. A relaxing and beautiful spot that I didn’t even know existed until now, and definitely worth seeking out. The property is a 1920’s former mansion with gorgous gardens and a old restored barn on site.

The atmosphere was lovely. We enjoyed dining on the outdoor patio next to the fireplace, although the inside dining room was nice too. The food was fantastic – fresh and tasty.

Overall, it was a perfect evening with great food and service and a great venue for outdoor dining at this time of year.

Sweet Potato Planks

Started with the Sweet Potato Planks, a bite-sized portion of roasted sweet potato topped with a French style sour cream and a crispy piece of Italian bacon (pancetta) on top. Served five to a plate, it was a nice little starter for two people.

Potato and Leek Soup

Next course was the Potato & Leek Soup. A creamy and satisfying bowl of potato soup made with leeks, not onions, so the taste profile was softer and not as bitter as you find in some restaurants. The House prepares this dish by filling it with bits of delicious local tangy goat cheese and freshly chopped (still green, not cooked) arugula swimming in the soup.

Shrimp & Grits with Bacon & Carrots

I tried the Shrimp and Grits with Bacon and Carrots as the main course. The shrimp were very large in size and perfectly cooked. The grits were creamy and soft and were a nice change from potatoes or rice. The dish was topped with a drizzle of sweet corn sauce and bits of spicy serrano chile’s.

My only suggestion is to add a bit more bacon flavor to the dish.

Fig-Ricotta Fritters

Dessert was devine. A serving of New Orleans style fritters fried up and served with three sauces: Fig Balsamic, Fresh French Cream and Salty Caramel. They were pefectly sized and came out hot and delicous.
