My Favorite Italian Restaurant in NJ!!

I rarely go to Italian restaurants: I’m Italian, an accomplished home-chef and picky. I find most to serve some strange form of “Italian Fusion” that the chef invented to cater to American tastes, and often feel that I can do better than the chef! Not so here: it’s a traditional Italian (many of the dishes could be found in a Guliano Bugialli cook-book – many of the diners are Italian-speaking); and I’ve been eating here for over 13 years and have never had a bad meal!

This intimate, elegant restaurant is owned by two fellows from Venice, and reminds me most of a trattoria: while the menu items are quite good, the real gems of the day are told you you orally by your server In addition, Clemenza and Ernesto are patrolling the dining room to make certain that all is well.

I particularly enjoy the hot seafood antipasta (clams, shrimp, mussels etc), the Papardelle with wild mushrooms and truffle oil, the Ossobuco, which comes with creamy risotto, the veal chop, well, I could go on and on…

The average dish is $18 to $25, and all are worth it!

Osso Bucco

A huge veal shank, perfectly prepared and served on a bed of risotto Milanese. Excellent!

Terrible service, bland-tasteless food

I had a very disappointing dining experience here tonight. We came on time for a 6:00pm reservation. Restaurant was busy but not full. We ordered and then waited much too long for the food that hadn’t arrived. Three tables of people who came after us were served before us. We alerted the waiter and he checked the kitchen and then told us the food would be coming out soon. Much more time went by and again he checked, then he offered us complimentary wine. Still too much time elapsed. When the food finally came, one dish was not even hot and had to be sent back. Our orders were rushed. The maitre d’ offered us complimentary desserts but never fulfilled this.

When asked for an explanation he said they were short-handed and apologized. This was the first mistake—being short-handed doesn’t excuse skipping an order. Our order was skipped because of the staff’s disorganization and lack of attention. Then the food was bland and ordinary. No attempt was made to enhance the flavor by offering grated cheese, pepper, or other condiments. This was the second mistake. Finally the staff committed the third mistake by becoming scarce and ignoring us. Each one of these missteps made the problem progressively worse.

By not being honest and later thinking that ignoring the customers would cover up their mistakes ruined our dinner tonight.

There are too many Italian restaurants in the area that don’t make these critical mistakes and serve tasty food to ever consider Tutto a Modo Mio.

An Excellent Meal!

My wife & I went to Tutto A Modo Mio for the first time tonight & the meal was excellent! We had a reservation & I’m glad we did because the place filled up rather quickly. (It was 7:30 on a Saturday night.) From the moment we sat down at least 4 different staff members came to our table to take our order, give us bread & water, ask us how we were, & just attend to our needs. The bread they served was delicious: It was fresh & crusty & made in the owner’s bakery in Hackensack. We ordered a a stuffed artichoke & grilled eggplant as appetizers. Both were really delicious! I’ve never had an artichoke in an American restaurant prepared so well! It was fresh & moist without an excess of garlic. My wife had homemade cavatelli with sausage & rapini. It was very tasty with the sausage nicely browned. I had Fettucini Pescatore in a red sauce with lobster, clams, mussels, & calimari. It was superb! The pasta was homemade. It was flavorful with a really nice texture & the sauce had a rich lobster flavor. The fish was very fresh: not gummy or dry. For dessert we shared a piece of tiramisu & had two cafe macchiatos. The tiramisu was creamy (plenty of mascarpone) & the lady fingers moist with espresso & liqueur; the macchiatos were strong & rich—we didn’t even need to explain what an Italian-style macchiato was! To sum up, we really enjoyed our meal! The food was excellent & so was the service!
