Brilliant food in austere but appropriate setting

Wild Ginger is part of a small chain that includes a sister reataurant of the same name in Great Neck and Water Moon in Rye.

The food is the star here. While the decor is spartan but nice and the unisex bathrooms are bright and usually clean, it is the food that shines brightest.

I eat there weekly, often having sushi and a salad, but sometimes venturing into the hot foods as well. Wild Ginger is an Asian restaurant, with a few riffs on different styles of Chinese, Thai and Japanese dishes. The older customers and the youngest gravitate to the cooked foods, while college students up to and including middle-aged folks like me tend to gorge on sushi and sashimi.

All the food is well-presented and sparklingly fresh, and the salads, long the bane of Asian restaurants, here are a revelation. All of them are good, not a bad one in the bunch.

Service can be uneven depending on the server, but Mary is a standout. She is professional and friendly and never writes down what anybody at the table orders. Her gimmick is a great memory. Only once has she made a mistake on an order at my table and it was nice to rey something free that ended up becoming a staple.

I am not a drinker, but many people seem to enjoy colorful mixed drinks and sushi.

I would imagine most patrons spend anywhere from $25 to $40 per person. The portions are right-sized, not too small or enormous. Weeknights toward the end of the week find the place pretty packed and during the school year getting in on Satirday night might include a wait. But the secret here is that weekends in the summer finds most of Bronxville empty, so Wild Ginger has seats.

It is currently my favorite Westchester restaurant and worthy of at least a visit to check it out. But please don’t love it as I do. I still want a table with Mary serving.
