You have to try the catfish salad!

Looking for real thai food without being overcharged for the tablecloths? Look no further. Yai’s stays true to its Thai roots, without making the food too mild to accommodate western tastes. What the restaurant lacks in decor, it makes up for in the intensity of flavors in its offerings. Top choices are the Catfish Salad — a spicy, tangy salad of julienned crisp green apples, sliced red onions and chilis, topped with a delicately crisp catfish “nest” — to the rich warmth of duck presented with the slight sweetness of pineapple to add to the depth of the creamy red curry base (best with steamed rice to offset the full-bodied intensity of the duck/curry combination).

So if you’re around Hollywood, stop by — you’ll be glad you did!

Yay for Yai

Thai-Chinese joint, right next to Natalie’s Peruvian. I’ve been here a few times, and always been pleased.

Some of my recs include: combination fried rice (excellent, light, not greasy with pork, shrimp, chicken, scallions, and white onions); BBQ pork leg with peppers and garlic (wonderful sauce, fatty, but oh so tasty); steamed catfish in red curry (spicy; the catfish is cut up into pieces, but just as well so that the sauce marries with the fish better; taste of fish still comes through without having that “muddy” smell often with catfish); crispy pork with chinese broccoli (stir fried with garlic; chinese broccoli is very firm and crispy with a bright green color), salted fish fried rice (expensive, about $14 for a large order but it’s soooooo delicious).

Expensive, but it’s super delicious. A fish lover’s dream fried rice!

Best Authentic Thai Food in LA!

This is one of my favorite Thai restaurants outside of Thailand, if not the best in LA! Being a native Thai, I can truly say that the food served here is authentic, and it tastes fantastic without having to pay for the ambiance. The place is kind of a hole-in-a-wall, located in a small strip mall with 7-Eleven and a donut shop. So, if you can ignore the lack of white table cloth, the rundown location, you will be happy with the food and service. Mostly, the patrons are Thai. Don’t expect a Thai Elvis to sing while you eat, though. :-)

One of their specialties is the steamed seafood curry, which should be ordered as soon as you sit down since it takes a while to prepare. Make sure to tell them how spicy you want it to be—mild, medium or super hot! It is served wrapped up in a giant foil, and inside you’ll find a variety of seafood (shrimps, crab, squids, fish, clams, mussels, and scallops) in a red curry sauce over collard greens. It is the most expensive dish there, everything else is about $7-10, and the portions are big. Must do family-style at this place to sample as many dishes as you can. Try their noodles for lunch as well.

This food is so good that many of my out-of-town friends would not complete their visit to LA without eating at Yai! I highly recommend this Thai restaurant to Thai food lovers. It does get busy during lunch time and dinner on weekends. Luckily, they open up a bigger Yai restaurant on Hollowood Blvd., just east of Western.

Steamed Seafood Curry

It is served wrapped up in a giant foil, and inside you’ll find a variety of seafood (shrimps, crab, squids, fish, clams, mussels, and scallops) covered in a rich red curry coconut sauce sitting on a bed of tender collard greens.

Crying Tiger (Grilled Beef)

Now, this place does serve the authentic grilled beef with the spicy dipping sauce that will make you cry. The beef is well marinated and quite tender. This takes a while to prepare as well, so order it early.

Chinese Broccoli with Crispy Pork

I have not been able to find another Thai restaurant that can cook this dish as tasty. The Chinese Broccoli or Collard Greens are sauteed with oyster sauce and garlic and served with crispy pork/pork rind. You’ll find it surprisingly refreshing despite the fattening pork.

Thai Boat Noodles Soup

This is one of the best places for the famous Thai Boat Noodles Soup. Yes, the broth has blood to thicken it, just like how they make it in Thailand! The thin rice noodles is served with thinly sliced beef, beef balls, tripes, liver, and some morning glory/bean sprouts in the heavy broth. It is top with chopped cilantro and sauteed garlic. Very tasty and filling. You can add more fish sauce, sugar or vinegar to your liking.
