Noodle delights

Different Korean noodle experience! Dishes are generally quite sizable so this place is great bang for the buck.

For our group of seven, we ordered the chik mul naengmyun (arrowroot cold noodle soup) + beef ribs combo, bi-bim naeng myun (spicy cold noodle – no soup), kimchee mandoo (giant kimchee dumplings), squid tempura, beef and mushroom bi bim bop, and one additional order of beef ribs. My favorites were the chik mul naengmyun, bi bim naeng myun, beef ribs, and beef and mushroom bi bim bop.

The naeng myun, the restaurant’s specialty, were indeed delicious. The noodles are very dark, almost as dark as squid pasta, and very thin. In contrast to the more commonly known memil naeng myun (made of the lighter buckwheat flour), chik naeng myun is much chewier; thus, one must slurp whole noodles into your mouth versus biting into straight a chopstickful of noodles. The chik mul naeng myun was very refreshing and makes a perfect summer dish, with the arrowroot noodles and vegetables swimming in the icy cold soup. The bi bim naeng myun, although are also cold, struck me as more of an all-weather type of dish. It’s a bit spicier than the naeng myun cold soup dish but not painfully so.

The beef ribs were also surprisingly tasty and tender, even though they were cooked in the kitchen vs at a charcoal grill at your table like at typical Korean BBQ joints. The beef and mushroom bi bim bop is served in a sizzling stone platter which the waitstaff will mix for you at your table. Like the other entrees, this dish is enormous. Also, unlike many other bi bim bop dishes that I’ve had, this one provided an even balance between the beef, vegetables, and rice. Moreover, this bi bim bop did not have egg mixed in. I am not a fan of eggy dishes in general and so this was great for me, but any egg fans out there might miss it.

The kimchee mandoo were quite good too; these large steamed dumplings are medium spicy and are HUGE, much larger than most mandoo that I’ve had. I doubt that I could eat more than one per meal!

The one dish that I wouldn’t order again is the squid tempura. Unlike typical Japanese tempura, this is served without a dipping sauce, although you can always use the soy sauce provide at the table. While the batter was excellent (rich without being too oily), the squid was so tough to the point that some of us couldn’t even bite into it.

In terms of service, the waitstaff was solid and attentive, despite some language barriers. All in all, Yu Chun Chik Naeng Myun provided a yummy, satisfying meal – and for only $12 per person!

My favorite naeng myun in the world. Whenever I’m in SoCal, I try and make a visit – it’s that good, and there’s nothing close to it in NorCal. Perfectly flavored broth, perfect, flavorful noodles; even the ice is perfectly shaved. It’s awesome.
