Best pound for pound restaurant in Tucson

Not a glamorous place but extremely good food at rock bottom prices..Service is kind and very mellow as one would expect at such an authentic establishment…Everything we had was delicious…

Hidden gem of Tucson

Though visually lackluster and unremarkable, Zemam’s is truly a hidden gem of Tucson dining. If you’re looking for a romantic or elegant dining experience with ambiance and decor, this converted house-turned-restaurant is not for you. Its furnishings are humble, and their modest decor consists of authentic Ethiopian arts and crafts, posters and flags on the otherwise plain walls. But what Zemam’s lacks in curb and visual appeal, it makes up for in flavor.

Expect to dine Ethiopian-style, eating with your hands from a communal platter shared among your table. Meat-eaters and vegetarians will both delight at the selection of wat --the curry-like stews of meat, vegetables and legumes-- to choose from. The wat comes served on a sheet of injera --a soft airy sourdough crepe-- that one uses to scoop up the wat with your fingers and ferry it into your mouth. Forks and utensils are available upon request, but are not necessary and detracts from the unique and social Ethiopian dining style.

For small parties or beginners, I recommend the Zemam Plate which allows you to choose 3 of the diverse wat preparations to try. One sample platter would suffice for 2, or 2 plates for a table of 3-4. Everything on the menu is delicious, and I have never had a bad meal at Zemam’s. For those wishing to end their meals on a sweet note, ice cream is offered as a dessert. However, it’s just generic flavors available at any diner and is nothing special.

Be advised that no alcohol is served at Zemam’s. However, diners are welcome to bring your own beverage, with a modest $1.50 corking fee.

The service is friendly at this mom-and-pop operation, but on the slow side. I’ve taken dates to Zemam’s for a culinary adventure, but it’s most suited for a relaxed dinner among friends. The best part, perhaps, is the affordability of this place. When it comes to best value for your money, Zemam’s truly cannot be beat. Two people can eat for well under $20 and have a satisfying and delectable meal.
