Excellent, and open late!

Went to Zuni last night and tried a LOAD of their dishes. Service was great, atmosphere is nice (but a bit cramped) and the food was very good. Note that I didn’t have the hamburger (yes, the hamburger), but I heard it was stellar.

Almost a pudding-like texture, different than most polenta. Very cheesy, but not a strong cheese taste. A little too light IMO, lacking in flavor.

bean and bacon pasta

Excellent pasta, similar to carbonara but with small lima beans in it which worked surprisingly well. A little buttery, but I think that worked well.

Halibut cheeks

Good quality, in a buttery sauce, but nothing too remarkable.

Roast chicken for two

While I’m not a chicken fan, this was about as good as roast chicken can get. Comes also with some roasted bread-ish croutons underneath that get some of the chicken juices…very good.

Gateau Victoire chocolate cake

A VERY strong, not too sweet chocolate cake, which is how I like it. Oneof the better chocolate desserts in the area, though it would be better if it were served warm IMO.

Bass, with avacado and potato/tomato

Good, though actually a little disappointing for sea bass (which I usually love). The flavors were a little lacking, though what flavors there were (cream, avacado) worked well.

Roast chicken and burgers!

After hearing rave reviews on Chowhound of their roast chicken and burgers, I just had to try them. Man, this place is crowded. We came in on a weekend around 1pm and were told we had an hour wait. But thankfully, after 15 minutes of standing in the packed bar area, the host came and told us we had a table. We ordered the roast chicken, burger, and a side of fries.
The roast chicken lived up to expectations, as did the burger. The fries were good, but nothing to write home about. All in all, we had a very nice eating experience. I definitely want to come back here to try other dishes on their menu.

Roast chicken for two

Perfectly seasoned and the toasted bread salad below it soaks up all the flavorful juices. I love it even though I hate eating whole chicken.

Zuni Burger

Excellent meat quality and a unique flavor. Not the best in the world, but very good.

expensive, but good food

the food is good, but if you’re looking for a cheap eat this probably isn’t the place for you. the ambiance is casual elegant and the service is friendly & professional. a very upscale place to dine, but still casual.

i felt as though the menu didn’t offer anything that caught my eye, and the higher prices will probably make it less likely that i’ll return.

Frisee Salad

i’d give this salad 5 stars if it were a bit larger. the size is more consistent w/a small appetizer. very tasty though, and flavorful, light.

Shoestring Fries

a medium sized mound of thin fries. very salty. enough to split between 4.

Zuni Cafe Wine List Review

We are going to cut to the chase. We love this wine list! Consisting of wines from the United States, France and Italy, it is concise, to the point, and there are a number of great options under $80 a bottle. On the other hand, if you have some money burning a hole in your pocket, then sample a few of the white and red burgundies on the list.

Start your evening with the 2010 Domaine Roalnd Schmitt, Alsace, Pinot Blanc for $35 or the 2010 Kelly Fleming, Napa Valley, Sauvignon Blanc for $52, and follow it up with the 2009 Domaine Comte Abbatucci, Ajaccio Faustine for $50 or the 2007 Domaine Richaud, Cairanne, Cotes-du-Rhone for $60.

If money is not an issue, order the 1995 Charles Heidsieck, Blancs des Millenaires, Blanc de Blancs Brut, Reims for $180 or the 2008 Domaine Francois Raveneau, 1er Cru, Vaillons, Chablis for $158, and follow it up with the 1990 Beringer, Private Reserve, Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon for $112 or the 1986 Chateau Lynch-Bages, Pauillac for $235. All four of these wines represent some of the best restaurant wine deals in the San Francisco Bay Area.

As with all VinoServant reviews, you will see the price at the restaurant followed by the mark-up over retail (Veuve Fourny & Fils, Brut Rose, 1er Cru, Vertus | $78 | 1.6x | This translates into a retail price of $48).
