Lazy cooks and waitresses make for sad experience

Tried their Spicy Chicken Burger which the waitress said was delicious, but despite her saying she was familiar with it, the chicken sandwich I got was missing half the ingredients listed in the menu. I had no time to send it back so I ate it as is. Apparently she and the cook didn’t care enough to do it right despite the restaurant being almost empty.

Can’t really review it because my sandwich was incomplete

Sorry Charlie, but two strikes and you're out

I’m really disappointed. This little basement eatery used to be a great place to get a bite before going to a flick at the Art or other downtown event, but no more. The time before last my wife and I were served warm imported Czech beer on tap which I gave them a pass on. (Hey, they may have had some electrical problem. Who knows?)

But recently, again before attending an event at the Art, they overcooked my breaded mushrooms until they were dark and hard and even inexplicably gave me half the usual quantity! Now I watch my calories, but they don’t know that! On top of all that my wife and I experienced some gastrointestinal problems in the next 6 hours which we can only attribute to this meal.

My advice? Either avoid altogether or look for dishes that require minimal cooking such as salads and stick to the bottled beers. That’s a shame since the Czech lager on draft is actually pretty tasty when properly served but it’s not worth ruining your evening.

Fried Portobello mushrooms

Fine when given 2 large specimens and NOT overcooked due to cook’s negligence

Mas Amigos

The only place currently to get eclectic Mexican

Most of the Mexican restaurants in Champaign do Mexican light meaning the mole is mild, like gravy, and the spices cater to middle-aged American tastes. Not Mas Amigos. Their mole is dark and spicy, as is the red and green condiments they’ll bring to your table. You’ll notice from the moment you start with the chips and salsa that this new restaurant wants to get it right. I talked to the owner who’s from Mexico City and he takes pride in using styles from all over Mexico, not just those in the tourist towns. My favorites are vegetarian burritos and cheese enchiladas. And try their guacamole, easily the best in town.

vegetarian burritos

With rice and beans, easily my favorite veggy Mexican dish. Just enough to satisfy without taking a box home. Slather on some of the house red and green hot sauce and your on your way to a memorable experience.
