Root Five Waterfront Restaurant

 4914 Lake Shore Rd
Hamburg, NY

Worst restaurant experience in years, maybe decades.

We arrived to a partially empty restaurant on a beautiful sunny and warm September day at around 4:30. We were asked if we had a reservation, which we did not have. We were seated at a table overlooking Lake Erie and sat for 20 minutes with no acknowledgement from the servers. A server asked the people at a table next to us if they needed anything on 3 different occasions, but never even said so much as “hello” to us. Our server was a kind and dutiful person. My wife and I both ordered the black cod fish fry. The other menu items were not very appealing based on odd names and ingredients and very limited. I saw other customers order burgers, but apparently we didn’t rate for that part of the menu. $24 was way out of line for a little fish fry. The fish was okay, but half the portion size you get in the majority of WNY restaurants for 12 bucks. The fries were like greasy potato chip slices. The apple slaw was the most desirable part of the meal. The bill with 2 small fish fries, a glass of wine and a diet pepsi including tax and tip came to $70. WHAT A RIPOFF. The lake view is awesome, but somebody else needs to run this place. Do yourself a favor and drive right by and stop at Hoak’s. At least you know its an old fashioned dive tavern with a great view of the lake and has reasonable drink and food prices.
