Damn Good Dogs!!!

I was out in about in beautiful downtown Portsmouth with my husband on a cool November evening. We thought we should try something different for dinner like Green Monkey or Sake. After looking at the menus posted on the outside windows and thinkin’ hmmm… Thursday night it’s a work night “do I really want to spend this much on a small dinner?” So we decided to try State Street Saloon, we had’nt been there for probably fifteen years since our drinking days.

Hot Dogs

Sometimes you just want a grilled dog the way it used to be! these were. Grilled rolls with a snappy skinned dog and fries hand-cut and crispy! Yum. No I wasn’t counting the calories or trans fats this evening because sometimes you just need that old time nostagic taste .
The waitress Vicky was perky and very personable.Sometimes when I am in Portsmouth there is a feeling of snobbiness from some of the waitstaff, some not all… Not here.
They have three huge screens in their dining area if you want to keep up on sports and the news. After consulting with Vicky she assured me the Bloody Mary’s with home made mix were good, they were really good! So when I am in the mood for something sinfully good and I want my comfort food I’ll go back to State Street Saloon. No pretention and it fits your budget!!!

Sushi at it's freshest!

Shio is a new restaurant near Big Lots in Portsmouth. I tried the lunch Bento Box #5. Their sushi was the freshest I have ever had. The tuna, salmon and tempura was tasty and fresh. The decor is clean and typical of most Asian restaurants. The staff seemed very happy and helpful.
I have eaten there twice and both times the food was consistent and good. This is definitely my new “sushi eating place.”

Bento #5

Yummy and fresh

The lunch prices ran about ten bucks for a bento box The one I had (there are 7 types) consisted of :Sushi (3), Tempura (3), chicken teriyaki (4 ounces) and shumai (2) ,salad, and soup!

Who can beat that?

Chartcurie and Iron Steak

My husband and I received a gift certificate for this restaurant. We went on a busy Saturday evening because there was musical entertainment by Miss Tess (jazz/blues)
THe restaurant and tavern are historic and had plenty of original architesture from the era of an old port tavern. The menu had some fine items to choose from. I chose the Chartcurie (assortment of meat and cheese w/pate’). My partner choose an iron steak with potato and green beans. The steak was tender and flavorful. Overall the meal and the atmosphere were well woth the price. We ate in the tavern where at the bar is a spring fed well you can glimpse some koi fish ambling about. Our waitress was the most pleasant, detailed and enthusiastic I have seen in this city.
The only item that I did not care for was the Rose Margarita, yuck is all I can say about that.

Being in an old historic part of Portsmouth will always be special to me, so I strive to contribute my patronage to these fine establishments. There is music 6 evenings out of the week. I hope to come back on a Tuesday because they have a two for one deal. I can try some of the other items on the menu without breaking the bank!

Very good assortment of made on premises sausage, head cheese, pate

Raw Ground Beef

Our first time at this restaurant. The decor is bright, crisp and clean. The menu is a variety of contemporary foods: burrito, wraps, chicken and all named in a comical way after celebrities. I ordered the grilled chicken burrito with the lime sauce. It was very nice and tasty although the burrito wrap was a little soggy . My husband ordered the steak burger “High end Beef” he ordered medium. His burger was completely raw inside. I gave it back to Heather and she brought it back to the chef. Two minutes later it came back still raw inside. At that point we waited for the waitress
. She must have been busy because she never came back to ask how everything was, if she had we again would have sent the meat back to have grilled the rawness out. Anyways, i think this is probably uncommon.
The restaurant has a great menu, the decor is very nice, the wine list is decent. So I’ll go again and try it on another day.

Chicken burrito

Very nice portion, good rice, beans and the chicken was great. The wrap was a little soggy. Overall good meal

Perfectly Prepared and Served

I was invited by an associate of mine to have dinner on a Thursday evening in Portsmouth, NH. We picked Brazos, which is a relatively new restaurant . It,s theme is Latin food.My friend started off with a nice Cabernet and I had a cosmopolitan that was fantastic. Our apps. were blue crab salad, fried oysters and a nice arugula salad. The starter rolls were served with a unique side of olives and spices diced and ready to spread on the bread. The oysters were presented in a pleasing and tasty display. The blue crab salad was fresh and enjoyable. The house special was Pinon Lasagna. My friend said it was very good and fresh. I had the skirt steak which I deem to be the best beef i had ever had. Served perfectly at my request of medium rare. Nancy ordered the salmon. It was very fresh and very tasty. The atmosphere is pleasant. The decor has a flair of sophistication and a Latin like feel. The menu is unique as are the flavors that abound in each dish that we ate. The servers are friendly and attuned to their customers. I love this place. It is something that this beautiful town needs. We have over 200 restaurants that have become complacent and static. There is room for growth in this city. Brazos proves you can always do better…

Pinon Lasagna

Well put together flavors and presentation

Authentic Greek Food

Very good Greek food. The menu has excellent descriptions on the meals. It’s about time this area has a Greek restaurant.

Souvlaki "kabobs"

Tasty and fresh. It comes with 2 sides either a Greek salad, Greek green beans, rice or fries. Grilled to a perfect taste.

One of Cafe Nostimo's top sellers!! Spanakopita Plate - Spanakopita "filo filled w/feta and spinach" at Cafe Nostimo

Spanakopita "filo filled w/feta and spinach"

Very large portion but somewhat mushy. Overall it was ok.

Dolmathes "stuffed grape leaves"

I loved them, but I love this type of food. All the meals came with a nice yogurt dip or lemon honey.

Tried 3 way BBQ

This is a new restaurant in a somewhat residential area of Portsmouth. Very clean and casual. The do have beer and wine in bottles. You may have to find parking across the street during their busy hours, but it is definitely worth the short walk. I ordered a 3 way combo: pork ribs beef brisket, chicken all BBQ, it came with 2 sides. i choose a mild spice dirty rice and crispy onion rings. I am very happy to finally have some authentic BBQ in town.

BBQ ribs, chicken,brisket

A little spicy for my friend ,just right for me. I loved sitting and looking out the window at the people passing. I enjoyed the atmosphere of young and old enjoying their food.

Elegant Presentation

I ate here on a busy evening. I was with 2 of my associates. We tried a variety of seafood, chicken and appetizers. The wine list was phenomenal! Their fish is exotically prepared and fresh. The owner is right there to ask and to make sure everyone is happy with their meal. This is a somewhat pricey menu, but you get what you pay for. I can’t wait to go back.

Very good
