I love Pearl Oyster Bar so I was excited to try Mary’s and it did not disappoint. I started with the seared baby squid salad which was delicious and tender with the tiniest kick of spice. For my entree, I went for the bouillabaisse – the mildest of broths whose flavour grew as I ate the shellfish in it. I saved the lobster for last and savoured its sweetness with the now richly flavoured broth. The final touch was the toasted ficelle with aioli that I ate as one would eat a biscotti with coffee. Delicious.

One of the things I loved about the restaurant itself is the proliferation of regulars who are all willing to talk to strangers and eager to share their love of Mary’s. The actual venue is definitely more low-key than Pearl so it’s an ideal for an impromptu lunch of dinner. Remember, no reservations, so either show up right when service starts or be prepared to wait!
