Hand pinned tacos, fine little roadhouse.

The finest tacos I have had in Metro Kansas City, MO, and probably anywhere else! These are of the hand pinned, deep fried variety, with real longhorn or parmesan (or both!) and plenty of finely seasoned ground beef, you can get chicken if you prefer. (Taco tuesday $1.25 BEEF tacos) The cheese and onion enchiladas are covered bountifully with cheese, no scrimping here.( Wednesdays cheese and onion enchiladas are $1.25 each) Also free bowl of hand cut chips and choice of hot or mild homemade daily salsa to start off your visit. Many combintion plates are available, reasonably priced. Finish off with Fried Ice Cream and/or sopapillas. For breakfast (7am till 11 am) try a Larry’s Junkyard Burrito, loaded with mexican chili, pork, hash browns, eggs, onions and peppers. Serving staff takes good care of you!
You won’t leave hungry.

In-a-tub

 4000 N Oak Trfy
Kansas City, MO

What's happened?

I ate my first tacos at this place in the early 60’s when they were at approximately NE 42nd and North Oak Trfwy. It was a world changing event because I had always eaten the loose meat pocket burgers and was not one given to change. Fast forward to 2015. The location has changed a couple of times, from 42nd to approx 37th St. way down in a hole off N. Oak (closer to Cascone’s) to the present location (not counting the In-A-Tub franchises at Antioch Shopping Center, Platte Woods etc.). I fly in and out of old Municipal Airport 2-3 times a year and of course visit In-A-Tub on most of my stops.
Something has changed, not for the better. I realize the almost cult following this place holds in the hearts of high school students and alumni of North Kansas City and St. Pius High School but nostalgia can’t replace the good eats this place had when the wonderful Scruby family ran the place in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.
I always have my usual 4 meat and cheese tacos, covered with what used to be wonderful powdered cheese, and each time the price has been increased dramatically. The shells used to be thinner, the meat wonderfully seasoned and gristle free and plenty of it! Now the cheese is cut with something that make me sneeze, the shells are thick as Always Save brand at your local market and you are lucky to get over 2 tablespoons of meat mixed with extenders it seems.
It is very sad to see a once fine fast food restaurand succumb to this, I hope to see things change. Until then I will go to Claycomo and satisfy my taco cravings.
