Good food brings people together and adds spice to your life.

Things I like: eating vegetarian food, trying new restaurants, watching cooking shows on TV, experimenting with my own recipes, and anything spicy!

Just Phở You

I think Mignon Pho + Grill in Kearny Mesa (San Diego) might just be my new favorite restaurant. One of my friends had read a blurb in the paper that mentioned that they feature a vegetarian phở soup. Traditional phở is made with beef broth. I’m a vegetarian, so my friend and I, who is not a vegetarian, decided to give it a try. Of course they do serve traditional beef based soup as well, so not to worry if you are not a vegetarian. The veggie phở was surprisingly savory and full of good things like fried tofu, mushrooms, bok choy and rice noodles. You can also choose brown rice noodles, if you prefer, then you mix in fresh bean sprouts, chilies, and Vietnamese basil. We also ordered the shredded green papaya salad with a spicy sweet and sour dressing. I had never tried this traditional Vietnamese dish before and now I’m hooked on it! My friend ordered the California bánh mì Sandwich, with grilled pork, a fried egg, French fries, and a tangy Vietnamese relish on a baguette. My friend is not prone to spirited culinary outbursts like I am, so I was surprised when he gleefully announced that this sandwich was the best thing he’s ever tasted! We also ordered French fries sprinkled with lemongrass. Why didn’t anyone ever think of that before? The fries were crispy and delicious, and the lemongrass gave the fries a wonderful extra flavor component. I’m giving this place kudos for their inspired vegetarian items, but you meat lovers out there will be more than pleased with their extensive, reasonably priced menu. Vegetarian phở at Mignon Pho + Grill

Vegetarian phở

This is one of the best vegetarian noodle soups I’ve ever tasted. Phở is traditionally a beef based soup, but this was truly an inspired and welcome vegetarian dish that both meat eaters and vegetarians can appreciate.

Lemongrass French fries at Mignon Pho + Grill

Lemongrass French fries

This is the second best plate of French fries that I’ve ever tasted. The best ones came from a Hawaiian restaurant called The Bali Hai. Fast food French fries are terrible. I’ve eaten a lot of French fries in my life, but who would have ever thought that adding lemongrass would raise the lowly French fry up to a dish of gourmet status?

Green Papaya Salad at Mignon Pho + Grill

Green Papaya Salad

This was the first time I had ever tasted green papaya salad before and it has made a convert out of me. The texture is crunchy and fresh and the dressing is spicy and sweet at the same time. It doesn’t taste like anything else I’ve ever had before. Ever since tasting this dish at Mignon Pho + Grill, I’ve eaten green papaya salad all over town. While always good, this one is probably the best of all. I’d recommend it to anyone who was looking for something light, healthy and refreshing, that was willing to take a chance on trying something new.

My friend, who is a culinary junkie, said this was the best thing he’s ever eaten, anywhere!
