Outstanding Mediterranean Food

My family just tried this restaurant, which only opened last week (March/2011). We were greeted by both waitresses and the owner, who introduced himself. You can tell that he is eager to make a successful go at this. I can’t imagine that he’ll have any trouble.
After drinks, we were served a basket of pita triangles and fried pita chips, which were delicious even by themselves, but they were also served with a plate of garlic sauce. My husband thought it was a little too bitter, but I say….hey, it’s garlic sauce. There was no messing around here. And the crazy thing was, my kids couldn’t get enough!
Soon the owner came by with a plate of hummus for us to try. Lucky us. It was addictive, and I’m pretty picky about hummus. Out of maybe 15 attempts, I’ve liked only three, ever. This was at the top of the list. (As a side note, Mediterranean Island on Kalamazoo at 44th Street has good hummus in the deli).
We asked for recommendations from our waitress, and she recommended the “Shish Combo”, which has one shish kabob (beef), one shish tawook (chicken) and one shish kafta (ground meat with spices), along with rice or fries and soup or salad. She also recommended the lamb chili for our soup selection, and rice over the fries.
Well, either she has excellent taste, or everything on the menu is amazing (or both, I suppose). We were very happy. The chili was…how do I describe it? I wasn’t overly spiced or overly hearty, or overly anything. But it had a very deep flavor. Delicious. The meat was wonderful, as well. The marinade and grill flavor were outstanding. And then the rice….who gets excited about rice? But this was fantastic. It was very aromatic, tender, not the slightest bit sticky, and covered in wonderful sliced almonds that gave it a great contrast in texture. Loved it.
If I had any complaint, it is a minor one. The children’s menu was very limited, and pricey. But that is easily remedied: Leave the kids at home. Or, if you must bring them along, go with the knowledge that kids apparently adore pita and pita chips, and if they’re my kids, they love them sandwiched together with a smear of hummus or garlic sauce. (shrug) Also, know that the kids’ meals are sized to match their price. The burger was no kids’ meal burger. It would have fed an adult quite nicely, with enough fries to match it. My daughter only ate half. So two kids could easily share a meal, unless one has a very large appetite.
Perhaps the best thing I could say about this restaurant, was that my husband and I both had the the thought that we would love to come back and try something we’d never tried before. That’s not something that you want to do when the food is mediocre. This was so good that we trust them to make any unfamiliar dish that we might try delicious, as well. I couldn’t wait to get home and review this restaurant.

Hommous

The best I’ve had. Addictive.

Shish Tawook

I actually had this as part of the Shish Combo, but it was the best part.
Great marinade, great grill flavor.
