Whole Foods Market--Cuisine for all Cultures

When I found out that Whole Foods Market was opening in the Bergen Towne Center in Paramus, NJ—I had no idea how this eatery/ market would be one of my favorite stops. Known for its healthy and organic products, Whole Foods Market is a super-popular place to get—and eat—great food.

For $7.95 a pound, you can help yourself to healthy, delicious, and yummy food at the food bars located near the front of the store. Boasting different choices on a regular basis, the Indian food options are a staple and my husband’s favorite. Everything is cooked fresh and for each item, ingredients are listed if you are interested—and I am! No preservatives, nothing unhealthy—just delicious food. The Indian food has choices for you like chicken curry, potato samosa, and aloo gobi. I have eaten the shrimp orzo salad boasting fresh shrimp, artichoke hearts, and orzo pasta, and I loved it, There are a host of salads, like low-fat or full-fat tuna, chicken salad with apples, and antipasti salad, which was mediocre. The dessert bar has the most amazing apple crisp and vanilla cake that I may have ever eaten. SO GOOD!

If you are not interested in the offerings at the four food bars, you can choose from the panini bar (I love the proscuitto and cheese panino), the brick oven pizza (also near $8.00 a pound, but the multigrain cheese pizza is addicting), a shish-kabob bar, a fully-stocked deli with prepared foods and deli meats, a chicken bar with moist rotisserie chickens, and a fresh sushi station. I selected the tuna rolls (8 pieces) for $4.75. The fish is fresh, caught sustainably, and satisfying. Other sushi/ sashimi options (10 pieces) were pricey at about $10.00.

The staff is friendly and knowledgable—the Whole Foods philosophy is that you can sample anything behind the counter prior to buying—not a bad deal! Maybe you can try this out at the gourmet coffee and chocolate counters; which feature some tempting treats like toffee bars.

Once you package up your food (at the serve-yourself food bar) or pick up your prepared-to-order meal (like a panino), pay at the check out counter with other market patrons…then, find a seat either in or out of the market. There is ample seating for everyone, and this is a family-friendly environment. Families with young children will find a pleasant atmosphere, clean tables, and highchairs. I’ve found that Whole Foods Market is a great place to stock up on some hard-to-find organic staples for my family, and then I can give my toddler some organic macaroni and cheese from the food bar.

It is hard to leave this market without something in your shopping cart, or in your belly. If you are in the area, and you haven’t yet checked out Whole Foods Market—you are missing out. Open on Sundays (a boon in itself in Bergen County, NJ!), Whole Foods Market is one of my top stops for great food.

Tuna Roll

I really like the sushi and sashimi at Whole Foods Market—the tuna roll was no exception. The fish is so fresh and well-prepared; the seaweed a great counterpart to the smooth fish texture. Just remember to ask the chef at the counter for extra soy sauce, as there is only one tiny packet packaged in the tuna roll container.
