Stuffed Cabbage the way Mom used to make!

While growing up in an Eastern European home, my fridge was always stocked with borscht for my dad, and mom would cook my favorite stuffed cabbage once a week. Situated on an East Village corner for the past 55 years, Veselka looks and acts like a dinner while serving soulful Ukrainian cuisine 24 hours a day.

On a suggestion from a friend we decided to have brunch one sunny afternoon at Veselka. Being too early to order the stuffed cabbage, I thought i would try their version of eggs benedict. A perfectly cooked runny egg with salmon and capers on top of a crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside potato latke. We also decide to share a plate of 7 pierogi, which included potato, sauerkraut & mushroom and arugula & goat cheese. Each of them were good but the arugula & goat cheese was outstanding!

On my next visit, after a night of heavy drinking I knew that this was the right time to try the stuffed cabbage. You have a choice of meatless (blasphemy) or meat-stuffed (the right direction) smothered with rich mushroom gravy. This put my mind and soul to rest, as I was able to go through the rest of my day fully satisfied.
