Worth a Visit

Our first time at Thai flavors and I was impressed with the menu formatting and excellent selections, especially the wine and beer which covered a wide but not extensive selection. I liked the colorful plating pictures on the walls, but they need to replace/remove the ceiling tiles and add some lighting which would help improve the atmosphere.

I tried the Thai Ice Tea which was excellent, and the Shrimp Won Ton soup which was very flavorful. For the entré, I ordered the Three Flavor Breaded Salmon, full size, very hot spice(4 Star), and found it to be just OK. The plating presentation was colorful, but the sauce was a little too sweet for my taste, and I didn’t care for the breading flavor that much, although the texture was crunchy. The salmon was cooked perfectly but next time I will order a spicier version, “8 star”.

For dessert, we both ordered the Mango Ice Cream with coffee and hot tea. The ice cream was not as rich in flavor as I’ve had elsewhere, my tea was fine, but my wife’s coffee she said tasted “burnt”, i.e., not fresh – heated too long. She couldn’t drink it.

We’ll give Thai Flavors another visit soon and i look forward to trying one of their wines and different entré selection.

A Wonderful Sunday Brunch Experience in Clive

After dining at Baru66 Saturday night, one of the owners mentioned the recent opening of their second restaurant this week for the breakfast/lunch, café or Bistro-style dining market, and so we decided to give it a try for Sunday Brunch. With Baru66’s Chef David at the helm, it had to be a winner, and a winner it was!!

The décor was very French; it was as if you were sitting outside in a bistro with the small tables and comfortable chairs, and a real blackboard on the wall with all the menu items listed. I noticed that for lunch you can order Paninis, actual Tartines, Burgers, Salads, and a good selection of beverages.

For an $18 Sunday Brunch, you get a choice of Eggs, and a Meat, and a Side, and a Bread. And for Children under 10, their breakfast was free !!! How kid friendly is that !!! For my selection, I had two perfectly poached eggs, smoked salmon on top of a cooked potato patty, Yogurt with fresh fruit and granola, and two pancakes with a warm chocolate sauce, and added some hot tea. I got to tell you it was all DELICIOUS as you can hear Chef David in the kitchen calling out the food orders to the sous chef. I left the table full and very satisfied. A very delightful Sunday meal and we will be back for more, especially to try their lunches as well.

Our First Experience at Lucca was absolutely delightful.

I couldn’t get over the one long room with the chef station right in the middle, and then the simple one page menu with five or six items listed with no descriptions. Of course, the waitstaff will explain.

Our waitress was wonderful and explained everything beautifully. We tried the Risotto dish, their Salmon preparation, and topped off with their Chocolate Cake. We totally loved the presentations, the preparations, and the atmosphere. Prices were reasonable for the value received, and my wife and I vowed that we’d be back.

Ribs are Not Too Bad

We’ve been here a few times. The service has been consistently attentive and prices are fair for the value received. The meaty ribs were very good and you can “smell the smoke” but they’re not the best that I’ve tasted. I like full-bodied, robust, smokey “flavor” that’s really cooked into the meat, along with a little more kick in the spice. I prefer ribs smoked at a lower temp and cooked more well done. They do have a great selection of sauces that you can put on your ribs, but I truly believe that really GOOD ribs should stand on their own.

For dessert, Bandana’s has a WONDERFUL Root Beer Float that you’ve got to try while you’re there!

Great Fresh Salads But Disappointed with the Scallops

Our first time at this restaurant and we found the place to be clean and the seafood was very fresh and our salads were wonderful.

I have found that a true test of a good seafood restaurant is by trying the Sea Scallop preparation. These preparations can range from just tasting terrible and rubbery to being absolutely superb. So I boldly gave the Sea Scallops a try. For presentation, I spied on my plate around six nicely browned although very puny looking scallops along with an unappealing large chunk of bread. The scallops were fresh and tender though, with a very little bit of grit which is not perfect but acceptable. My biggest disappointment was that these little morsels were absolutely tasteless with no apparent use of seasoning or any other special preparation.

My expectation for great Sea Scallops is to behold large, silver dollar sized sea scallops seasoned to perfection with a hint of lemon and sage as that would really satisfy my palate.

We’ll be back again to give the Waterfront a second chance.

A Wonderul Experience

Took advantage of Restaurant Week to enjoy some discounted lunch at Django’s, our first time there. We first tried the thin-sliced Django Onion Rings with three sauces, and they were perfectly prepared and delicious. We then ordered the Django Salad and the special Salmon penne pasta with tomato, red onions, capers, in a wonderful dill sauce. The service couldn’t have been better either. We’ll definitely be back for a dinner next time.

Surprisingly Good for a Hotel Restaurant

Our first experience at Castaways and our group of six were very pleased with the food, drinks, and atmosphere. We had Chicken Marsala, Smoked Chops, the Captain Chops, Fish & Chips, House Salad, and the Scallops Newburg. Not a complaint among any of them on the food or the drinks.

My Pinot was OK and the ice cream dish was OK as well – nothing to write home about. When in the area, we’ll definitely stop by again.

Scallops Newburg

I chose the Large Sea Scallops Newburg with artichokes and mushrooms in a creamy sauce. It was absolutely delicious although the accompanying Wild Rice dish tasted a little stale to me; nevertheless, the Newburg dish made up for it.

Centro Restaurant

Our Server was Great but Very Disappointed with the Food.

Our first Centro experience was a big let-down for us. To start, the menu items were not very inspiring nor were the entrée embellishments which were our fault as we should have previewed the menu online first. Then, the Olive Oil for our bread tasted very stale and then we only received one slice of focaccia bread between us in the basket. More did come, though. The glass of CastleRock Pinot Noir I ordered tasted like it came from an open bottle from days ago.

My Centro and Carol’s Mista salads were generous although the cheese and dressing we both found to be very salty tasting. Carol ordered the Parmesan Encrusted Halibut with Mashed Potatoes and said both had little flavor or seasoning and what she could taste did not taste good to her. I ordered the Plank Salmon with Pasta which was cooked perfectly but where I too found them both to be bland tasting.

We then tried the dessert and I very surprised to find that this “Italian” restaurant doesn’t serve the classic “Spumoni” ice-cream. Nevertheless, we settled for the sorbet where it was discovered that three of the flavor selections mentioned were not available which the Server didn’t realize when we ordered. Of what was available, we were served a generous three scoops each which both were satisfactory. The saving grace was that our server was attentive and genuinely interested in our satisfaction and so received a better than 20% tip. We won’t be coming back to Centro for quite a while, as it does not appear to be the dining value that we had hoped. Maybe Pizza is their forté and we’ll give that a try.

Carol ordered the Parmesan Encrusted Halibut with Mashed Potatoes and said both had little flavor or seasoning and what she could taste did not taste that good to her.

Pleasantly Surprised by the Quality

Our first outing to Splash for a quickie lunch blew us away.

I experienced the best New England Clam “Chowda” that ever I’ve tasted since leaving Boston/Maine. It was thick, creamy, full of clams and very tasty with a nice spice to it. With my lunch, I selected a glass of a very nice Sauvignon Blanc which took me by surprise as it was so fruity and silky on the palate yet finished crisp. My complements to the Sommeliere for this wonderful selection.

I ordered the San Francisco Style Fisherman’s Platter which was fresh, prepared perfectly, and of good size and exceptional quality. Carol had the Crab Cakes which she thought were good but she’d tasted better.

Finally, we went for dessert and I was surprised to see that in addition to the dessert selections there were very tempting selections of dessert wines by-the-glass to accompany. Carol had the Tea-Flavored Peach Sorbet which she adored and I had a very rich chocolate cake which was a chocoholic’s dream.

We’re definitely looking forward to coming back to try their dinner menu and their other wine choices.

Wonderful Bakery Products

La Mie Bakery – Absolutely wonderful bakery products but you may want to skip the cooked items.

Broccoli Quiche

We went here for a little breakfast and then to indulge in some of their light, flavorful, and not too sweet bakery items. We ordered their Broccoli Quiche which we both found to be tasteless and uneventful. So we’re not going to do that again. We WILL be back, though, to try out their sandwiches and will give a review.
