Burma Superstar, how I love thee

The food here is fantastic. Everything is always exactly as stated, exactly what I want, and is served hot and promptly.

They offer a ton of vegetarian options and the menu is very robust. They also offer “Americanized” type dishes for those who are less adventurous/don’t necessarily like Burmese food. :)

Minus 1 star for the usually hellishly long wait (if you come for lunch, you may not need to wait) and the average service. Everyone working here is super polite, but occasionally forget things or bump your table every time they walk by, etc.

I adore this dish. There are 22 different ingredients and each one shines in it’s own way. Savory, sweet, hot, cold, and spicy all at once!

These are really tasty. I could probably eat like 17. They are little pockets full of mashed potatoes, peas, and curry chicken. Super tasty. Also come with a delicious red sauce that is a little spicy and very sweet. Only con is they are deep-fried and can sometimes be a little greasy.

So. Good. Delicious, chewy noodles tossed with spicy chicken curry, onions, fried noodles, lemon juice, string beans, and a little bit of chili for added kick. You will keep eating this long after your full because it’s so ridiculously good.

Best That I've had in SF

Pretty awesome food here. Though to be honest, I can only read about half the menu. Great for groups, I came in with 4, but I saw a group of 16-18 doing just fine. Pretty big space that can take a bunch of people. Open pretty late (12:00am).

Decor is so-so, pretty standard, formica-type tables and chairs. It’s in the Tenderloin and can be hard to spot, so just keep an eye out!

Service is also pretty standard, can’t complain, but it isn’t stellar either. :)

They serve my favorite Asian-style beer here: Chang! Which is a super awesome bonus to the fantastic food.

Giant, ridiculous menu with anything you could possibly want from standard (pad thai) to exotic (sauteed alligator anybody?) plus a white board of daily specials=awesome, varied dining options.

Pad Kra Prow Moo Krab

This. was. ridiculous.

Porkbelly quick fried so it’s crispy on one side in this delicious light sauce with basil. OMG.

Kuay Tiew Phed Toon

Noodle soup with well-done braised duck. House broth. Came with some kind of crunchy leafy green in it… so good.

Pad Kee Mow

Hot, hot hot!!! Be prepared, this is spicy. Delicious. I got tofu variety… wished there was a bit more by way of veggies and tofu. But, noodles were great!

Mango and Sticky Rice

This is the best mango and sticky rice I’ve ever had ever. The rice was sticky but not a “rice puck” like they can often be, it didn’t need cut. Tossed in delicious coconut-ey sweet and salty sauce with perfectly ripe mango. Perfect finish to my meal. :)

My favorite neighborhood Italian

This place is a great, generally solid option for Italian food that isn’t crap. Davide does a great job running the restaurant with literally a skeleton crew (they have 1 chef. ONE.). I always appreciate the food I get and the service I have received; the staff is focused on execution and not schmoozing their customers.

I had one of the best meals I’ve ever had here. 6 courses of awesome. Great wine list, showing quite a bit of quality and variety for not a lot of money,

Decor is great, soaring ceilings, low light, white table cloths.

I knocked one star off because large group dining is a no-go here. This is DEFINITELY a great date spot, though, and their service and food really shines in a small group, sharing type environment. Also, they close pretty early.

Venison Carpaccio

Incredibly well-executed carpaccios here. The venison in particular… caper, tuna aioli, rocket. Yummy

Pasta Carbonara

Carbonara is something is so easily mess-up-able that you have to be incredibly confident in your kitchen AND have some serious chops to pull it off consistently. So, cheers to you, Bella.

Risotta de Sepia

Scary looking, but delicious. This dish is BLACK black, not just a little black. Strong brine flavor from the ink sets off the seafood perfectly.

Agnolotti

Super tasty raviolis, nice portion size, but could have been slightly warmer. The tomato cream sugo is DELISH.

My go-to restaurant in the city for everything, literally.

This place is awesome. This is my go-to for everything and everybody; they take care of people with allergies, vegetarians, vegans, down-south-home-types, everyone. Their food is simple, homey, and awesome. The service is impeccable, the bar is the best in the city (in my opinion), and the space is a gorgeous, neighborhood-focused renovation of an old bank. Fantastic.

I come here to recoup after bad dining experience, just for fun, happy hour, fancy dinners entertaining important guests, family gatherings, and the list goes on. Appropriate for pretty much everything.

This place is a favorite of industry workers in SF, also, due to it’s awesome food and kitchen being open until 1am every night. Roll in here after 11:30 and you’ll see quite a number of local restaurant workers. :)

Pickled Beets with Warm Goat Cheese

So good… house pickled baby beets, housemade crostini, a crock of warm chevre, and a small salad of rocket and frissee. Killer.

Wilted Chicories with Anchovy and Lemon

I love this appetizer. It’s a great use of an under-appreciated ingredient; the hearty green. :) Greens are still crunchy, but not tough anymore. Dressed with a fantastic, simple dressing with house garlic croutons.

Duck Breast Cassoulet Style

All the duck here is always awesome. Perfectly cooked breast sitting on top of smoky, delicious white beans. OMG.

Lavender Pot de Creme with Pudding Cake

This is a ridiculous dessert. Perfectly balanced, but still retaining some in-your-face big flavors. Strong lavender, dark dark chocolate… yum.

Commonwealth

Commonwealth was an awesome experience. The food was sublime, the service was friendly (even when bouncing a random somewhat-crazy dude that walked in and started serenading tables) and knowledgeable, and the atmosphere is killer. Such an awesome experience, and what’s better… this restaurant has only been open for like 9 months or something absurd for how polished and wonderful it is. This place is known for their tasting menu ($10 of which is donated to a local charity), but my party opted to go ala carte, and we’re happy we did. We’ll be back for the tasting menu. :)

The chef here has chops. Every flavor was clean, not over-complicated, and perfectly complimented. Medium-sized portions perfect for sharing. We had quite a bit of food, so I will do a quick list in order:
*Chickpea panisse with romesco 7/10
*Gnochhi with chantrelle mushroom and truffle oil 8/10
*Asparagus with crushed avocado 8/10
*Salad of winter greens and shaved root veggies 8/10
*Dayboat scallops with sunchoke puree and brussel sprout leaves 10/10
*Grilled octopus with smoked potato 10/10
*Sea Urchin with sweet potato tempura 8/10
*Duck breast with something delicious that I don’t remember entirely (not my main) 10/10
*Lamb breast with chard, mint-scented potato puree and balsamic reduction 12/10
*Frozen coconut mousse with fresh citrus salad 12/10
*Lemon sponge cake with thyme ice cream and candied honey 9/10
*Peanutbutter semifreddo with frozen popcorn 10/10

Atmosphere: What a STUNNING renovation! Very clean, modern, but also interesting… the skylight up to the wood rafter ceiling is pretty cool, and there are little terrariums of air plants hanging everywhere. Smallish, but we never felt cramped.

Service: PERFECT pacing. We were here for 3 hours, but never once were bored, felt we were waiting too long,
They also have an awesome by-the-glass wine selection and a great cellar.

All in all, a fantastic dining experience that comes highly recommended. All of the above food plus probably 10 glasses of wine among us hit us with a $320 bill, split four ways. I will be back (soon hopefully) with more friends in tow..

Lamb Breast with Chard

This was a perfect use of a commonly unused piece of lamb, the breast. The potato was unexpected with the mint was unexpected. Chard was perfectly cooked and thoroughly awesome.

Dayboat Scallops with Sunchoke Puree and Brussel Sprout Leaves

There are no words for how awesome this was. Seriously.

Frozen Coconut Mousse with Fresh Citrus Salad

The perfect ending to this meal… the mousse was frozen with liquid nitrogen so it literally shattered and crunched in your mouth and then melted into heaven. Perfect compliment to the grapefruit and yuzu salad.
