Bon Chon Chicken
Flushing, NY
Korean Chicken
Can you say CRUNCHY CHICKEN? This place does chicken, and chicken and oh yeah, chicken. They offer chicken legs, wings, and breast. Deep fried in very hot oil so it’s super crunchy, and not greasy. You can get your chicken with a Soy/garlic sauce or a hot sauce (which was hot but not blistering). They also serve fries, fried calamari and popcorn shrimp. (also high crunch factor)
The food is made to order, so be prepared to wait a bit. It’s worth the wait. There are many teas to chose from, including a small wooden cask (for each table) of iced tea.
Desert was a creamy lemon sorbet, and a complimentary shot of Espresso martini (served in a shot glass made of ice.) Nice touch.
We had a little bit of everything, fries shrimp, calamari and assorted chicken.
As in many Korean restaurants, the entire staff greets you when you come in. Everyone was exceedingly polite and friendly. They appreciate your business and it shows.
Dishes Tried:
Soy/garlic chicken
Super crunchy fried chicken legs and wings. Three dipping sauces, spicy yet bearable. $17 gets you a large portion, about 15 legs and as many wings.

Sik Gaek
Flushing, NY
Lively Korean Restaurant
Sik Gaek is a very lively Korean restaurant in Flushing NY.
The food is traditional Korean. Evey meal starts off with a fried egg, soup (fish broth?) and whipped egg (looks like a souffle). Tonight we had Baby octopus in a very spicy red broth. It consisted of baby octopus (about 30) clams, mussels, whole shrimp, vegetables and lots of noodles. The broth was spicy and made my eyes water,( but I survived). The restaurant is very busy with an open air kitchen. The decorations are a Korean version of TGIF’s, with stools for chairs. Each table has it’s own bbq burner. A very enjoyable experience, A great place to go if you’ve never had Korean food. The servers will explain everything from food to Korean traditions.

Biiig Sandwich
Today I ate at Constantines Deli in Flushing//Bayside. I had the Clearview sandwich, Chicken cutlet, melted fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, romaine lettuce, tomato , roasted sweet red peppers and balsamic vinaigrette on a hero.

Wanka Peruvian Cuisine
Maspeth, NY
Peruvian Cuisine
A very nice, pretty restaurant. From the outside it doesn’t look like much, but the inside is quite pretty. Peruvian artwork and handmade rugs adorn the walls. The menu brings a mixture of Chicken, Fish and Pasta.
For appetizers we had chicken tamales with red onion salad and also fried calamari with a spicy tomato sauce.
My son had the “Pescado a la Macho”, a fried fish fillet topped with clams, crab, shrimp, rice and a cream sauce.
I had “Chicharon de pescado” Small pieces of different fried fish with red onions and battered fried yuca.
Dessert? Of course! Home made Flan served as a wedge of pie. I also had a Peruvian beer ( Cusquena), a malt lager. I think I’ve found a new favorite beer. Sorry Heineken.
Excellent.
Service personnel were polite and attentive.

Kum Gang San
Flushing, NY
Family Style Korean
This is my second venture into Korean food. The first was a small Manhattan dumpling restaurant. The second was Kum Gang San in Flushing NY.
After we ordered our appetizers and main entrees, the staff started bringing small plates of different vegetables and small dried fish, sauces, Kimchee, Squid, tofu, and a sweet yogurt sauce. 15 plates in all! Then came the food. WOW!
For appetizers we had Hae Mul Pa Jun, Korean style crispy rice flour pancake made with finely chopped assortment of sea food and scallions. Excellent. We also had Man Do Gui,pan-fried vegetable or beef dumplings.
I had Yook Hwe Bibim Bap, Raw marinated beef strips, on top of steamed rice and assorted raw vegetables. The meat was delicately seasoned and the vegetables provided a fresh, light contrast to the meat. I was a bit surprised at the raw egg yolk on top, but I mixed it all in and was pleasantly surprised by the mingling of flavors.
My son had Cod roe soup. Made with whole roe sacks, assorted veggies and a delicious fish broth. The fish roe had a pleasant flavor (not fishy) but the texture was grainy, like sand. A texture that takes some getting used to. The service was friendly and staff took the time to explain all of the side dishes.
Dinner for two cost $53……stuffed to the gills.
We’re going back soon.

Flavor of India
Glen Oaks, NY
Excellent Buffet
A quiet restaurant where the food is superb and the service is better. I eat there every sunday with my son. A buffet lunch costs about $18 for two people. The flavors of the food are very subtle and varied. There are vegetable Pakoras (veg fritters)
spicy Dal (a type of lentil soup) Palak Paneer (curry spinach with a type of Indian Cottage cheese), Chicken tikka massala, curry goat, and Tandoori chicken. They make a very fragrant Jasmati rice that I go nuts for. The curries are not at all overpowering as is the case in foods of many other cultures. The staff is very polite and happy to see you. There is quiet Sitar music in the background, so this is a great place for a business lunch, or meeting.
A very pleasurable experience.
Dishes Tried:
Chicken tikka massala etc....
Very subtle flavors, many dishes to try.

Mandoo Bar
New York, NY
Korean Dumplings!!
Top notch Korean dumpling restaurant. Very reasonable prices and friendly service. We feasted on Kimchee, pork, and mixed vegetable dumplings. Some were pan fried, some were steamed. We also had stir fried wide noodles with assorted seafood( shrimp scallops and fish) I was very surprised to receive a bill for only $30. The staff was very friendly and happy to explain different menu items and the spices used.

Uncle George's Greek Tavern
Astoria, NY
A Greek Classic
This taverna, open 24 hours, has been a favorite of mine for the last 15 years. Cash only, so leave your MasterCard at home. I ate there this past Friday, and fed four people to the point where they could hardly breathe, for $100 with tip. My favorite is Kontosouvli, roast pork served with lemon potatoes or Horta, vegetable greens cooked in olive oil and lemon juice. They also make a wicked rabbit stew(available on Saturday only) We also had Skorthalia, a mashed potato/GARLIC/olive oil paste. STRONG but very good.
Overall an excellent dining experience.
Parking is a headache as this is a very busy neighborhood.

Jackson Diner
Jackson Heights, NY
An unexplored treasure
I’ve gone to the Jackson Diner a few times now for the buffet, and have been quite pleased each time. The restaurant was clean and the service was nice. The servers were happy to tell me about the dishes and spices used in the buffet. My younger son(a culinary institute hopeful) and I were impressed with the Masala Dosa station, where they make the Dosa bread right in front of you. All in all a very pleasant experience. We’re going today for lunch.

The flavors at the buffet were subtle, nothing there to overpower the palate. Even the curry dishes were not heavily spiced.
