Pretty Disappointing
I love chile rellenos. It is supposed to be a roasted poblano pepper filled with cheese, dipped in an egg or flour batter, then fried.
The chile rellenos at Plaza Azteca were made with a raw jalapeño, which is much smaller than a poblano, then dipped in so much batter that it took three cuts to find the pepper and the cheese inside. It was almost a pastry or dough nut wrapped around the very tiny jalapeño.
The red sauce on top was nicely flavored, but the fact that they used the wrong pepper, didn’t roast it, and used WAAAAY too much batter ruined the experience for me.
My co-diners also found their dishes to be at or below average. The chips were fine but the salsa was very chunky and runny, not well flavored.
Overall they were friendly, and service was fine, but the food was not worth trying again, even if I just ordered badly.
