Where good mexican comes from.
I’ve been going to this restaurant since I was about 10 years old and when I think of good Mexican I think of El Cotixan.
If you are not from SoCal you may not know about Mexican joints like this one. If not, you owe it to your taste-buds to try the real deal. As a kid my family and I spent a LOT of time on the Baja peninsula and, to me, this is the best spot for Mexican food on this side of the border. Other SoCal residents will disagree, but that’s because they have a Mexican place just like this one around the block from them.
Every time I walk in to El Cotixan it makes me happy. The ambiance is perfect. Take some time to soak it in: Beer cooler and salsa bar to the left, paintings of Mexican peasant life along the right wall in faux brick alcoves, one large menu above the cash register dead center and plastic tables along both walls. Enjoy the maraichi music being played in back on a boombox by the two burly chefs, singing along as they crank out the goods. Remember this! These are the true signs of good Mexican food.
Just order what ever sounds good as it is all sure to please. I’m a torta man (a sandwich made on a large roll with beans, meat, avocado, lettuce, tomato, onion and cilantro for those not in the know), either carne asada (grilled beef) or carnitas (roasted then grilled pork), but I’ve also been known to go for a burrito, tacos, flautas (rolled, shredded beef taco in a flour tortilla, deep fried). Once again, everything is good.
I like a 50/50 mix of their fresh salsa and their hottest, nuclear red colored hot sauce and wash it down with a horchata (a rice drink). You’ll never want to go to a “sit-down” Mexican restaurant again.
