Kanji Steakhouse & Sushi Bar

I have been eating at this restaurant since it opened and used to think highly of it… the decor is nice, the food was good… but lately that opinion has drastically changed.

First of all… we started ordering their lunches to be delivered to our office, a pretty large order. well I had asked to substitute a sweet potato roll for a tuna roll (a $4.00 instead of a $6.00 roll) in my lunch, they wanted to charge $1.00 EXTRA for each roll I substituted…

Second, I went and ate IN the restaurant, we had a fairly large lunch for a few of us. I asked for some teriyaki sauce to dip my food in and they brought me a very small bowl with some sauce. Charged me $1.00 for the sauce on the bill and the manager refused to refund it.

I used to get Chicken Teriyaki box lunch all the time, it was a nice grilled chicken breast, the usual… well starting this summer, they have a “guest chef” .. and he apparently changed the way they cook things… and now you get a strip of boiled chicken with some sauce thrown on… If I had wanted chinese food, i would have gone out for chinese!

and finally… we ordered lunch today and i got a Tuna Amazing, specifically asking for regular tuna instead of spicy tuna as I can not handle the wasabi that is in spicy tuna. They delivered the wrong thing. When i called them, she said they could replace it but it would take about an hour. I offered to come in and get it… and she said that was fine. I asked if there was any compensation since i had to drive all the way over there to exchange the food and she said NO. When I got there… I started to tell the head sushi chef what had happened, and as I was talking to him, she walked over to him, said something in their language, and they both turned and walked into the kitchen… WHILE i was still talking to him!!!!

The staff is RUDE, the food is average, they nickel and dime you to death with extra charges… and you get a better deal at SAWA just down the road.

Although one wouldn’t confuse this place with an authentic Japanese-owned and operated sushi restaurant, we’ve eaten at Kanji several times in the past and were generally pleased with the quality of their sushi.

Last week we reserved a table in the Hibachi section of the restaurant to celebrate my youngest daughter’s birthday. Both I and my eldest daughter ordered the $22 White Tuna Hibachi. It turned out to be a surprisingly large portion of fish, which immediately had me wondering if this hibachi offering was a way to salvage white tuna that was no longer fresh enough to make it as sushi.

Later that night we both were feeling sick and my daughter had digestive problems which I’d prefer not to describe in detail here, but which are still going on (three days later). Based on her symptoms, we did a Google search and discovered that we had almost certainly eaten a fish called Escolar, which is often passed off as white tuna. Suffice it to say that I will not be eating at Kanji in the future.

Kanji is one best restaurant in Tinton Falls and Eatontown. I like Kanji Steakhouse and Sushi. The service is NO,1 and food taste good.
