making a name in fair trade
We like this place. This is not your ordinary cup of joe nor is it some snobby coffee house where the baristas are out to impress you… you can feel right at home here because the emphasis is on fair trade coffee and tea, in particular helping third world farmers and growers. the owner has traveled extensively to Africa and to Central America in search of small farmers, growers, craftspeople…just about anyone that he can help through this business. the walls feature a PowerPoint slide show with many photos of small coffee farmers and tea pickers along with a number of photos from the his visits. The coffee is truly superb—some of the best we’ve ever tasted—and just as we like it roasted to a medium dark flavor—not that heavy burnt taste that the big guys pour. By the way, all coffee is roasted on site, so it’s fresh and roasted in small batches—possibly the smallest batch roasts in Portland. Lattes and cappuccinos are skillfully poured also. Others! offers a great little community for customers coming to talk about fair trade and the Third World. Many of the patrons have spent time there. So, there is almost always someone around who can discuss global poverty, healthy, and educational issues. Free wi-fi. And, delicious gelato—with about a dozen or so flavors. We give it five stars on the Portland coffee scene and go so far as to name it “Portland’s Best Kept Secret”—certainly among the coffee houses.
