sushi maki
Seattle, WA
Tiny sushi shop with big helpings!
It’s easy to miss Sushi Maki located under Capitol Steps appartment as the entire place is no bigger than my bedroom! Takeout is suggested although there are some stools inside and small tables in the street. It can be busy for dinner however you can order by phone in advance. The staff is SUPER friendly. Sometimes they are closed on Sunday or holidays.
The combos are the best deal with a california roll and 7 piece assorted nigiri or spicy tuna roll and 5 piece nigiri for less than the price of a cab-ride. Their spicy tuna roll is large(enough for a meal), fresh and spicy! I also enjoy the caterpillar roll which comes loaded with avocado. Their nigiri is well cut but not “straight off the boat” fresh.
Drop in for takeout on a hot summer day or lazy winter evening and you won’t be dissapointed!
Dishes Tried:
spicy tuna roll
Large, tasty, fresh, spicy and cheap! What more do you want to know?
Caterpillar Roll
Loaded with avocado, fresh unagi and topped with sweet sauce. Very filling!
California Roll Combo
Good: Large portions, good price, well rolled/cut
Bad: imitation crab-meat, nigiri was good but nothing amazingly fresh
Blackbird Bistro (CLOSED)
Seattle, WA
Blackbird Bistro
My wife and I visited Blackbird recently for a relaxed Sunday dinner out. The location is easy to find in West Seattle. We were seated promptly in a private booth. The music wasn’t too loud and the atmosphere is warm. Some modern art decorations kept us busy while we were waiting for our food. It is the kind of place you can come dressed up or wearing your winter fleece without feeling out of place.
Drinks are well priced with a fine selection of wines and happy hour everyday 4-6pm weekdays and 3-6pm on sat/sun.
The service was a little busy with only one waitress and a busser but it was a Sunday night. We still received everything we asked for fairly quickly.
The Peppered Ahi came well reccomended for good reason. It was prepared perfectly and the side of calamari mixed it up. It was enough for two people to try. The side salad was a fresh mixture of healthy greens topped with beets/carrots and we had the light blue cheese vinaigrette.
The entree of choice tonight was porc-chop with cubed apples, mashed potatoes and grilled green beans. The beans were nothing special and tasted a bit crisp for my liking. However; it went uphill from there as the potatoes were prepared just how Iike them: light on butter and mashed with the skins. The porc itself was a good size with only a small bone and the apple-cubed sauce mixed with the fatty meat just right!
Blackbird Bistro hit the spot. Hopefully you’ll enjoy it too! Next time we’ll try desert and we hear that brunch is tasty too.
Dishes Tried:
Peppered Seared Ahi
Delicious! Served over a bed of greens and alongside Calamari (not breaded). The sauce was tangy with a taste of wasabi. Fish was cooked perfectly!
Porc chops with cubed apple
Green beans and potatoes on the side. Potatoes not too rich mashed with skins in for a nice consistency. Beans a little dry as they were grilled naked but not bad.
The porc was a large portion with a small bone. The apple topping went great with the fatty meat. YUM!
